Fifty people who have affected Hindus and Hinduism in a negative way – Francois Gautier

2020.08.30 09:53 sardarbhagat Fifty people who have affected Hindus and Hinduism in a negative way – Francois Gautier

In a recently posted article on François Gautier’s website, he lists the names of 50 people who can be described as enemies of Hindus and Hinduism. He says that he created the list, which is incomplete, without malice aforethought.
Here is the list, 50 Biggest Enemies of Hindus (Dead or Alive), including the reasons he gives to justify his choice of enemies — Editor
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who along with a few hundred men, stood his ground against the most powerful emperor of his times, has practically no place in Indian history books and is often described as a petty chieftain or even a plunderer. So is Maharana Pratap, the only Rajput who fought against the Mughals and actually defeated Akbar in Haldighati.
Hindus tend to merge and melt wherever they live—and in the process, lose some of their identities and togetherness. And finally the most deadly and vicious intellectuals that we have reviewed above, are Hindus most of them. They are the ones that should be targeted, in a non-violent but firm manner. – Francois Gautier, 13 June 2016. The list has been edited by a staff writer at Newsgram and again by the editor of Bharata Bharati. See the original here.

Solfeggio Frequencies and Sound Healing Therapy
I've wanted to make a post on the topic of Solfeggio Frequencies for some time now, and finally went and did it over at the SoulNexus sub. I figured you guys might also be interested, so I'm cross-posting in the hopes it may reach some more like minded ones here :)
(I also made this in the hopes to get your guy's opinions and knowledge on Solfeggio Frequencies, Sound Therapy, etc. So please share your thoughts! I will be adding to this post as I find more info that relates)
~ Edits / updates @ the end ~

[I] "Vibration Is Everything, and Every Vibration has its Own Frequency":

"By exposing the mind and body to the Solfeggio Frequencies, you can easily achieve a greater sense of balance and deep healing; they align you with the rhythms and tones that form the basis of the Universe. This ancient scale is part of a 6-tone sequence of electro-magnetic frequencies called the Original Solfeggio Scale."
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." – Aldous Huxley

[II] What are the Solfeggio frequencies?:

"The original Ancient Solfeggio Tones are sound frequencies found in Gregorian Chants; each tone comprised of an electromagnetic frequency required to balance your energy and keep your body, mind and spirit in perfect harmony. Although they were used to reinforce the relationship man had with Source, they were deemed to be ‘Lost’ and sent into obscurity because they enervated the influence the Vatican assumed it had over mankind."

[III] Sound of Music:

"The Solfeggio Frequencies are linked to mathematics and religion — which we'll get to in a minute — and are said to have a powerful impact on one’s state of mind and health. Ancient societies have used the power of musical rhythm to hypnotize, heal and induce states of higher consciousness for centuries – indeed the theory behind the repetitive, rhythmic entrainment of binaural beats works on the same principal."
Many will remember the Sound of Music song, “Doe, a deer…” that encapsulates modern musical scale, as in:
  • "Doe, a deer, a female deer. Ray, a drop of golden sun. Me, a name I call myself. Far, a long, long way to run. Sew, a needle pulling thread. La, a note to follow Sew. Tea, a drink with jam and bread, that will bring us back to Do (oh-oh-oh)."
"This vocal note scale (do, re, mi, fa, so, la ,ti, do) is known as 'solfege' and is adapted from an invention by an 11th century monk named Guido D'Arezzo. He made many improvements in music theory and reworked standard notation to be more user-friendly by adding time signatures. To this day, this innovation has affected every modern vocalist. 'Solfege' in its original form can be found in Hymn to St. John the Baptist. It begins “ut (rather than do), re, mi, fa, so, la. And this is where the Solfeggio Frequencies story resonates from."
"Before we explore the healing properties linked to the Solfeggio scale, let's just acknowledge that music and healing are synonymous and this is nothing we don't know already. It really is not far fetched at all to think that music can heal the body and reduce mental and physical suffering. Science has proven this to be true..."

[IV]

"So powerful were the original six Solfeggio frequencies that their individual tones reversed the conditioning that caused severance from the Creator. They returned the balance belonging to the physical, mental and spiritual essence humanity was initially born with but had been stripped of."
"The basic principle of Solfeggio Frequency Healing is that of resonance; every object is in a state of vibration and therefore creates a frequency/vibration. This includes the various parts of our body, such as our organs, muscles, bones, etc. If these parts of our body are vibrating at their normal, healthy frequency, we call this state "health". If a portion of our body begins to vibrate at a frequency which is not harmonious to us, we call this "disease" ("dis-ease")."
"It is possible to use sound to project the correct resonant frequency of that part of the body which is vibrating out of harmony back into the body, causing it to return to its natural frequency and return to a state of health. This projection of vibrational frequency can be done through the sacred harmony systems, for example. Not everyone vibrates to the same frequency. The key ingredient is a quote from sound healer Jonathan Goldman "Intent + Frequency = Healing" This is the key to all healing no matter what tools or modality you use. Also the patient must have three things to aid and assist their healing:
1. Positive attitude
2. Being open and receptive to the healing treatment
3. A willingness to make a life change"

[V] The Original Scale has 6 tones:

☯ 396 Hz, 417 Hz, 528 Hz, 639 Hz, 741 Hz, & 852 Hz.

[VI] Numerological Values of the Original 6 Scale:

  • 396 Hz → 3+9+6 = 18 1+8 = 9
  • 417 Hz → 4+1+7 = 12 1+2 = 3
  • 528 Hz → 5+2+8 = 15 1+5 = 6
  • 639 Hz → 6+3+9 = 18 1+8 = 9
  • 741 Hz → 7+4+1 = 12 1+2 = 3
  • 852 Hz → 8+5+2 = 15 1+5 = 6 ...Hmm...weird huh?

[VII] The 3, 6, and 9:

"As we look at the six original Solfeggio frequencies, using the Pythagorean method, we find the base or root vibrational numbers are 3, 6, & 9. **Nikola Tesla tells us, and I quote: "If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have a key to the universe.""

Solfeggio Scale and the Additional Tones:

  • "Following the pattern established by these original tones, additional frequencies can be calculated. There are three frequencies which can be calculated below the 396 before breaking the pattern (63, 174 Hz, 285 Hz) and there are infinite frequencies that can be calculated above the 852 ( 963 Hz, 1074, 1185 etc.)."

[VIII] "The Healing Properties of the 9 Solfeggio Frequencies":

174 Hz, Soul Star Chakra - Reduce Pain:
  • "The lowest of the tones appears to be a natural anesthetic; it tends to reduce pain physically, energetically, and Karmic-ly. Establishing conscious communication with/throughout all cells, and can help traumatized organs/tissues etc. to return to their optimal state."
285 Hz, Earth Star Chakra - Influence Energy Fields:
  • "Influencing energy fields, sending messages to restructure damaged organs/tissues; it also leaves your body rejuvenated and energized. Works on Energy fields, Auric field (Etheric/Mental bodies, Etheric/Ketheric templates), that are responsible for purity and perfection of human organ systems."
396 Hz – "Ut" Root Chakra – Liberation from Grief, Guilt, Shame, and Fear:
  • "Liberating Guilt and Fear associated with releasing emotional patterns. Realizes goals and aspirations by creating a very strong magnetic Pranic field of energy. Only goals with enough energy can be realized in material reality."
417 Hz – "Re" Sacral Chakra - Undoing Situations and Facilitating Change:
  • "Breaking up of crystallized emotional patterns; connected with resonation processes/processes of amplification, enable returning to "original state of affairs" and your right path. Can cleanse traumatic experiences, clearing destructive influences of past events, and recreating the past so that it does not burden with its negative impressions. Can repair damages made by living in unaware fashion, or by living 'alienated from Source'. "
528 Hz – “Mi” Solar Plexus Chakra - Transformation, Miracles (DNA Repair):
  • "Brings transformation and miracles into your life, and 'used to return human DNA to its original/perfect state'. Derived from Latin phrase “MI-ra gestorum,” meaning “miracle”; it's the exact frequency used by genetic biochemists to repair broken DNA – the genetic blueprint upon which life is based. Tone ‘Mi’ activates your imagination, intention and intuition to operate for your highest and best purpose."
639 Hz – “Fa” Heart Chakra - Re-connecting/Balancing, Relationships:
  • "Associated with whole being interconnectedness, acceptance, love, enables creation of harmonious community and interpersonal relationships. Tone ‘Fa’ can be used for dealing with relationships problems within self, between family, partners, friends, etc. Strengthen extrasensory perception, for communication with parallel worlds or spiritual spheres, because it bridges distances, differences or conflicts."
741 Hz – “Sol” Throat Chakra – Expression/Solutions:
  • "Tone ‘Sol’ cleans the cell from different kinds of electromagnetic radiations. Another application of this sound frequency is solving problems of any nature. Aids well with strengthening the channel of communication within your self, with others, and your higher self; lead you into the power of self-expression, which results in a pure and stable life. Helps you to find your voice, and stand up for yourself."
852 Hz – “La” Third Eye Chakra - Strengthen Intuition, Returning to Spiritual Order:
  • "Associated with a pure love frequency unconditional love; raises awareness and lets you return to Spiritual Order. Tone ‘La’ is linked to ability to see through the illusions of your life, such as hidden agendas of people/places/things. Introduces higher vibrational levels to a person or a cell, which is directly connected to the principle of Light. Light is a higher form of bio-energy, therefore can be used in opening a person up for communication with the all-encompassing Spirit."
963 Hz - "Si" Crown Chakra - Awaken Perfect State, Connect to Divine Consciousness:
  • "Awakens any system to its original, perfect state; (re-)connected with the Light, all-embracing Spirit, or the non-vibrational energies of the spiritual world. Enables direct experience and the return to Oneness - our true nature. When applied to a cell, it can enable a kind of "cellular enlightenment", and transformation of the cell to a higher level connected to the sense of just Being and returning to Oneness."

[IX] How To Use the Solfeggio Frequencies:

"There are no 'wrong ways' to use the Solfeggios. Listen to the ones you are drawn to and only for as long as it feels right for you. As you start to 'lose interest', go to the next one that feels right for you. Listen for at least 3 times per week, minimum 15 minutes per session, for a period of 4-6 weeks."
"You can also listen daily by using it as background music while doing other things (studying, work, cleaning, working out, yoga, etc.) Even use the Pure Tone Solfeggios in the background at low volume while watching a movie or listening to music. Be creative."
"If you are listening to pure solfeggio frequencies without any additional music, then you'll want to fine tune the volume so that it is comfortable for you. Some people are very sensitive to sound and some are not so find your optimal volume level. This should also apply for solfeggios mixed with music or nature sounds, however the solfeggio frequencies are usually at a lower level than the music or nature sounds, so it is more natural to play this at a higher volume."
They can be listened to with or without headphones, but if it says it's a Binaural beat type track - the results will be more pronounced through the use of headphones. Isochronic tones, however, are just as effective and made to be used in either way you so choose :)

[X] "Binaural Beats Vs. Monaural Beats Vs. Isochronic Tones":

  • Binaural Beats: "First discovered by physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in the mid 20th century, Binaural beats are responses within the superior olivary nucleus of each brain hemisphere to precisely measured sound tones. Two separate tones will be presented to each ear, the brainwave patterns will then passively mimic the difference between these tones. For instance, if 150 Hz is played in the right ear, and 155 Hz to the left ear, the difference between these tones will be experienced (5 Hz) as a very relaxing theta wave, and the user’s consciousness will move into that particular brainwave state, entraining neural rhythms via what scientists call frequency-following-response (FFR). Today, Binaural beats are used to stimulate positive mental states for all kinds of benefits such as meditation, relaxation, sleep, focus, increased creativity and much more."
  • Monaural Beats: "(The second type of sound wave) They are combined into one sound before they actually reach the human ear, as opposed to formulated in part by the brain itself, which occurs with a Binaural beat. In order for the brain to hear and interpret Monaural tones, the different elements involved must be of the same frequency (for instance 85Hz in your left ear & 85 Hz in your right ear). Monaural tones most often occur in nature and form the basis for musical chords. Binaural tones, on the other hand, usually come from man-made objects that produce noise, such as engines. Although both types of tone are thought to be effective in entrainment therapy, Monaural is a bit more flexible in that it doesn’t require the use of headphones in order to be effective."
  • "Isochronic Tones: "Are similar to Monaural tones in that they are combined into a cohesive listening experience before they reach the ear. However, with Isochronic tones, the tones themselves are switched on and off via predictable patterns, creating a pulse effect that is extremely effective when used for therapeutic reasons. It is this enhanced effect that make Isochronic sound quite possibly, as some believe, the most effective type of beat in brainwave entrainment.

[XI] "How to Meditate with Solfeggio Music":

"Keep your mind awakened to the power of these healing tones. Allow the sound of Solfeggio music cleanse your mind, body and soul."
"Repetitive listening will be more beneficial as the vibrations of the music improve our sense of clarity and increases amount of energy. It Influences the energy field around you, your home and office and purifies the mind and body."
  • "One can start listening any solfeggio frequency according to the need. But it may be better to begin with frequency 396 Hz for Balancing Root Chakra. Visualize the red color. This frequency cleans the feeling of guilt and awakens your mind and turns grief into joy."
  • "Second useful Solfeggio frequency is 417 Hz for tuning Sacral Chakra. Color of Sacral Chakra is Orange. Visualize the Orange color. You will feel the change as the tone encourages the cell and your body feels energized."
  • "Solfeggio frequency of Solar Plexus Chakra is 528 Hz which brings transformation and has the power of DNA repair that is why it is a Miracles Tone. During meditation visualize the Yellow color and feel your body changing and aligning with this frequency. You will feel wonderful relaxing effect on mind and body. 528 Hz is the exact sound frequency used by genetic scientists to repair DNA."
  • "Listen Solfeggio frequency 639 Hz which helps you in connecting and balancing relationship and also opens Heart Chakra. During meditation and listening, during daytime as background music visualize Green color. This Solfeggio frequency has so much effect on inter personal relationship that it brings harmony in family, friends and social circle."
  • "Start Solfeggio music with 741 Hz frequency for balancing Throat Chakra. Visualize the color sky Blue. Vibrations of Music help in solving problems and awakening intuition. Your continuous listening to the music during the meditation will lead to pure, stable, spiritual, healthier and simple life."
  • "Solfeggio music with 852 Hz frequency helps in opening Third Eye Chakra. The color of Chakra is Indigo, so visualize Indigo color while listening Solfeggio music tuned to 852 Hz frequency. Your repeatedly listening will enable the cells to transform themselves into a system of higher level."
  • "Solfeggio music having 963 Hz frequency reconnects you with the spirit and awakens any system to its original and perfect state. Vibrations and listening to the music with eyes closed visualize violet color rays which enables you to experience Oneness and connects you with the spiritual world and balances Crown Chakra"
"Question - What if i feel “negative” emotions or bodily sensations while listening?:
  • As you also start to listen to the frequencies, you may encounter symptoms such as headaches, body twitches or even nausea. You may also feel emotions like anger, sadness, irritation, frustration, fear, anxiety, guilt, etc. come to surface. Do not be alarmed. This is perfectly normal. The tones are removing energetic blockages from your body so that the natural flow of energy circulates more freely. Just do your best to stay in that emotion so that your energy system can fully heal it. When they come to surface they are ready to let go. So it is safe to allow yourself to feel them. You may encounter these experiences through several listenings before they start to fade away for good. Patience and courage may be needed. And you have that within you."

"The Five Levels of Sound Healing" by Simon Heather:

  1. Audible Sound
  2. Emotional Sound
  3. Mental Sound
  4. Spiritual Sound
  5. Cosmic Sound

Audible Sound

"Sound has two aspects, its physical aspect and its subtle aspect. The physical aspect of sound is the sound that we hear. It is created by sound waves vibrating in our ears and our body.
Low-pitched sound effects the denser parts of our body, the bones and muscles. Lowpitched sound effects the lower parts of the body. High pitched sound effects the finer parts of the body, the skin and the nerves. High pitched sound also effects the head and upper body.

Emotional Sound

"We all have an underlying emotional vibration. Our emotional energy field is formed by the main emotions we have experienced during our life. Psychics will often perceive these emotions as colours in the auric field around the body In Chinese medicine there are said to be five elements. Each element has an association with an organ in the body and an emotion. This emotion will be heard in the sound of the voice."
 Wood - Liver – Anger – Shouting Fire – Heart – Joy/Lack of Joy – - Laughing/Lack of Laugh Earth – Spleen – Sympathy – Singing Metal – Lungs – Grief – Weeping Water – Kidneys – Fear – Groaning

Mental Sound

"When we think positive or negative thoughts it creates a subtle vibration in our body and in the energy field around our bodies. All of us have a mental energy field around us, which is created from our persistent thoughts.
The Buddha said that each of us is the result of our past thoughts -

“Our present thoughts create our future life. Our life is created by our mind. If a person speaks or acts with a mind grounded in fear suffering will follow him as surely as summer follows spring. If a person speaks or acts with a mind grounded in love happiness will follow him as surely as his shadow never leaves him.” (Dhammapada)

Negative thoughts towards other people can have a harmful effect on our bodies.

Spiritual Sound

"Great spiritual teachers emanate a powerful subtle energy. In India there are said to be two types of mantra, an inert mantra and a spiritually charged mantra.
An inert mantra is one learnt from a book or from an ordinary teacher. A spiritually charged mantra is one given to us by a realised spiritual teacher. The spiritually charged mantra contains the power of the teacher’s spiritual realisation and is transmitted to the student when they are ready.

Anahata

Cosmic Sound

"In Sanskrit the name for the heart chakra is ‘Anahata’. The word ‘Anahata’ means unstruck or unbeaten. ‘Anahata Nad’ or ‘Anahata Shabda’ refers to the Vedic concept of unstruck sound, the sound of the celestial realm.

“Anahata is so called because it is in this place that munis or sages hear that sound (Anahata – Shabda) which comes without the striking of any two things together.” (John Woodroffe)

A muni is an ascetic, a great sage. The word means "he who is silent". The inner sound heard in deep meditation is said to be ‘Aum’ by the sages of India, ‘Hu’ by the Sufis.
Aum is called the ‘Shabda Brahman,’ eternal sound or God as sound/vibration. According to the Vedas the entire universe has emanated from this primordial sound."
“The Supreme Being has been called by various names in different languages, but the mystics have known him as Hu, the natural name, not man-made, the only name of the Nameless, which all nature constantly proclaims. The sound Hu is most sacred……… for it is the origin and end of every sound as well as the background of each word. The word Hu is the spirit of all sounds and of all words, and is hidden within them all, as the spirit is hidden in the body.” ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

The Voice

"The scriptures of India (Vedas) state that music provides the vehicle for the manifestation of the cosmic sound. The voice is the most potent medium for the expression of the cosmic sound.
“When the soul desires to express itself in the voice, it first causes an activity in the mind; and the mind by means of thought projects finer vibrations in the mental plane; these in due course develop and run as breath through the regions of the abdomen, lungs, mouth, throat, and nasal organs, causing the air to vibrate all through, until they manifest as voice. The voice therefore naturally expresses the attitude of mind whether true or false, sincere or insincere.” ~ (Hazrat Inayat Khan)

Sound Healing

"When we give a sound healing treatment to another person the sounds we make will act as a carrier for our healing/loving intention. The person receiving the sound healing will feel this healing intention. The voice is the primary medium for the most direct and natural form of sound healing. Our earliest memories of the power of the voice occur when we hear the lullabies sung by our mother. Whenever we sing, chant, or produce harmonic overtones with our voice, the reverberation is felt throughout the body.

Sound effects our physical body through resonance. Sound effects our emotional body through tone colour, harmony and intervals.

“There are instances in ancient tradition when birds and animals were charmed by the flute of Krishna, rocks were melted by the song of Orpheus; and the Dipak Raga sung by Tansen lighted all the torches, while he himself was burnt by reason of the inner fire his song produced. Even today the snakes are charmed by the Pugi (a flute) of the snake charmers in India. All this shows us how the ancients must have dived into the most mysterious ocean of music.” ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

Healing Sounds and the Chakras:

THE CHAKRAS:

"The word chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning “wheel”, for chakras are seen as spinning wheels of light by those with the ability to see subtle energy. The chakras are found in many traditions, including Hindu and Tibetan. Many esoteric and occult “Mystery School” describe these energy centers. While the chakras have been incorporated in many spiritual practices, their existence seems to be based, not upon religion, but upon awareness of energy. There is even scientific instrumentation that is beginning to record and validate them.
There are seven main chakras, seven spinning balls of energy that are located centrally in the front and the posterior of the body. These chakras are transduction points– places where subtle energy from higher planes begins to become denser. The energy from the chakras then becomes more dense as it comes into the body. It next becomes the acupuncture points and meridians and finally, this energy transduces into the density of the physical body. Imbalances in the physical body can be detected through the chakras. Frequently, healers who work with subtle energy can detect imbalances before they manifest in the physical body by feeling imbalances in the chakras. By balancing the chakras, imbalances in the physical body will often disappear.
There is a feedback loop occurring with the energy of the chakras. The physical body interfaces with this energy and vice versa. Frequently, an imbalance in a chakra will manifest later in the physical body. It is possible, such as through a traumatic injury, for both the physical body and the chakras to be simultaneously imbalanced. Healing of the physical occurs much more rapidly when the subtle anatomy–particularly the chakras–are aligned after physical injury. Frequency shifting through resonating the chakras allows us to help create balance and alignment within ourselves." For a brief description of the chakras, click here

CHAKRA SOUNDS

"There are numerous sound that seem to resonate the chakras. Among the most popular are the use of vowels and the use of mantras. This use of vowels seem to be highly effective in balancing the chakras. The Sacred Vowel are considered sacred in many different traditions and Mystery Schools throughout the planet, including ancient Egyptians, Hebrew, Islamic, Tibetan, Japanese and Native American. There are a number of different systems of Sacred Vowels to balance the chakras.
An alternative method of resonating the chakras is to use the Bija Mantras, the Sanskrit letters from the Vedic traditions, which by themselves are said to balance and align the chakras. There are silent Bijas and spoken Bijas. These are the spoken Bijas that are chanted aloud in order to resonate the chakras. As with all systems of using sound, there are variations. Such is the case with the Bija Mantras.
There are many other aspects of using sound to resonate the chakras as well. Each chakra in the Vedic tradition is also associated with a particular element. In addition are sounds from the Shabd Yoga, the science of the Audible Sound Current. These sounds are considered to be Divine Emanations of the Creator.
Another aspect of sonic chakra resonance has to do with the actual frequency or keynote of each chakra. There a multitudinous different keynotes and scales with regard to this. I often will simply sound the vowels on a monotone (in the same key) and let the harmonic (and the specific formant of the vowel) create the chakra resonance.
Of particular note is that the fundamental frequencies used for this system are harmonically related–that is the notes are the natural result of the geometric vibrations of a given string (brought within a single octave). The tuning is different than that of a keyboard (which utilizes a C that vibrates at 261 Hz). The notes that are created from this harmonically related scale are based upon the harmonics created from the fundamental notes of the note C that vibrates at 256 cycles per second (and then having the harmonics transposed down so that the fit within the octave of that C note). 256 Hz. is a harmonic of 1 cycle a second. Many believe this keynote to be in natural resonance with many of the frequencies of the Earth itself. Some belief it is a harmonic of the actual frequency of the Earth. . .

2020.07.21 04:07 KiwiNFLFan Are overseas interfaith marriages recognised in Pakistan?

I know that Pakistani law only allows Muslim women to marry Muslim men, and Muslim men to marry only Muslim or Kitabi women. However, if a Pakistani Muslim woman married, say a Christian or Hindu man in a different country where such marriages are acceptable (such as the UK or USA) and the couple then returned to Pakistan, would their overseas marriage be legally recognised in Pakistan? If not, what would happen? Would the non-Muslim partner have to convert to Islam for the marriage to be valid?

𝟭. 𝗥𝗼𝗷𝗮(𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟮)
On 28 June 1991, K. Doraiswamy, an executive of the Indian Oil Corporation, was kidnapped by Kashmiri militants and put in captivity for two months. This inspired Mani Ratnam to make the film Roja. Doraiswamy's wife was fighting for his release, and according to Ratnam, it was her plight that the film was based on.
Filmmaker Mani Ratnam, coming off of a successful collaboration with music director Ilaiyaraaja, chose to work with a young composer called AS Dileep Kumar for the first time. When Roja hit screens, audiences heard the gentle melody of ‘Choti si Asha’, the thundering chorus of ‘Bharat Humko Jaan se Pyara hai’, the beautiful visuals painted by 'Yeh Haseen Vaadiyan', the fun cult classic track 'Rukkumani' Dileep became AR Rahman and Roja went on to be listed in Time magazine’s 10 Best Soundtracks of all time.
Roja starts out as a simple love story but soon transforms into an abduction tale. Ratnam’s Roja is a sweet-faced country girl who loves her blissful life. Her name means Rose.
Roja(1992) is also a contemporary adaptation of the story Savitri and Satyavan from the Indian epic Mahabharat set in the backdrop of the Kashmir conflict. The tale of Satyavan and Savitri is recited in the Mahabharat as a story of conjugal love conquering death. Satyavan is the soul carrying the divine truth of being within itself but descended into the grip of death and ignorance; Savitri is the divine word, daughter of the Sun, Goddess of the supreme truth who comes down and is born to save while Yama is the Lord of Death & Justice being responsible for the dispensation of law and punishment of sinners in his abode, Yamlok. In that sense Roja is allegorical, the characters are personified qualities from mythology.
The film traces the story of a woman (Savitri)Roja who marries (Satyavan)Rishi, a cryptologist working with R.A.W and fights a tenacious battle to rescue him from (Yama)Liaqat played by Pankaj Kapur. From then on, even as we're shown Roja battling on the sidelines, pleading with authorities to enable the release of her husband, she essentially becomes an idea - one that keeps Rishi alive and fighting. It was by making the audience invest their emotions in this couple thrown into a kind of violence that they've only read about in the newspapers that Mani Ratnam succeeded in bringing home the Kashmir conflict.
One could argue that the director paints too simplistic a picture while depicting the conflict in Kashmir depicting univocal shades of good & evil. But counter this with the fact that depicting the conflict in itself was an unprecedented brave attempt at the time. We see him correct this mistake in Dil se by portraying the other perspective in a more transparent manner.
The film also had many firsts, this was probably one of the first instances in Indian cinema involving someone (Arvind Swamy’s boss) talking about crypto — a series of cryptographic codes that had to be protected. It was also the first time that Kashmir’s fight for azaadi was shown on screen and the issue of militancy was addressed. Till that time terrorists in Indian cinema were residents of some unknown foreign land, in films like Karma or Tehelka. The most realistic aspect of the movie, in the original Tamil version at least, is that the woman needs an interpreter to translate for her and the authorities. Roja is a rural girl, who doesn't know any other language except Tamil, is suddenly thrown into a situation where no one understands her. Thus you have Hindi, English and Tamil, all being spoken in the same movie. In other words a Tamil movie with Hindi dialogues.
Roja’s success also lay in the fact that there was a rush of Mani Rathnam films that were quickly dubbed into Hindi and found a willing audience in the North. For example, the films Anjali (1990) and then later Thalapati (1991) whose dubbed version was released around 1993 were successful. His other films, Thiruda Thiruda (1994) and Bombay (1995), both were dubbed and released simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil.
Roja was the first film for which Ratnam used a Steadicam, in the shot that introduces the militants hideout to the audiences. The film was made on a shoestring budget. The technicians worked for less money with the understanding that the film would also be sold for less money. It was not thought of as something that would work on a big scale. The film was composed mostly of newcomers, a new music director, and it was about Kashmir which, according to Ratnam, not much was known about at the time. He called the film "a bit of an experiment". According to Ratnam, it was not originally planned as a political film: "It was a phase India was going through and these things affected me and found their way into my work."
Tamil Actress Aishwarya was initially offered the female lead, but declined it due to date issues. The role went to Madhoo. Aishwarya later revealed that she deeply regretted that decision, which was made by her grandmother against her will, for a Telugu film which was later cancelled. Ratnam approached Karisma Kapoor to play a Kashmiri girl, but he considered her "far too expensive for a Tamil film". In an August 2016 interview with Filmfare, Rahman recalled that he chose not to pursue education at Berklee College of Music because he got to work on Roja
Roja stars Arvind Swamy, Madhubala (Madhoo to Hindi cinema), Nasser, Janakaraj and Pankaj Kapur. A.R.Rahman who stormed the music industry with his debut, won the National award for best Music Director & cinematography was by Santosh Sivan. The film won three National Film Awards, including Best Film on National Integration, catapulting Ratnam to national acclaim. The film also gained international acclaim with its nomination for Best Film at the 18th Moscow International Film Festival. The film was later re-released for international audiences in light of the growing fear of terrorist attacks across the world. It is the first in Ratnam's trilogy of films that depict human relationships against a background of Indian politics
𝟮. 𝗕𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘆(𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟱)
Story of an inter-religious family in Bombay before & during the Bombay riots, which took place after the demolition of the Babri Masjid & led to religious tensions between Hindu & Muslim communities.
The soundtrack of the film became one of the best-selling Indian music albums of all time, with sales of 15 million units. The soundtrack was included in The Guardian's "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die" list, and the song "Kehna Hi Kya" ("Kannalanae") sung by K S Chitra was included in their "1000 Songs Everyone Must Hear" list. The song "Hamma" was later reused in Ok Jaanu (2017) as "The Humma Song". "Bombay Theme" has appeared in various international films and music compilations, while "Kehna Hi Kya" and "Bombay Theme" have been sampled by various international artists. The lyrics for the Hindi and Telugu versions were written by Mehboob. The Hindi version includes Urdu lyrics.
During the recording of the background score of Mani Ratnam's Thiruda Thiruda (1993), the Bombay riots broke out. Mani Ratnam planned on making a film in Malayalam about a boy who gets lost in the riots, and requested M. T. Vasudevan Nair to write the script. But since the idea did not materialise, he decided to make it in Tamil and the film that would later be titled Bombay & dubbed in Hindi.
Nassar, a Muslim in real life, was cast as the father of Arvind Swamy's character (a Hindu) while Kitty, a Hindu in real life, was cast as the father of Koirala's character (a Muslim). Ratnam deliberately cast them in those roles as a statement. The demolition of the Babri Masjid was shown onscreen through newspaper headlines and photographs, as the Censor Board did not want the makers to show the actual destruction. Mani Ratnam described Bombay as "a positive film about communal harmony". He said the Bombay riots were not the main focus of the film, but "a helpless, innocent man caught up in violence not of his own making" was.
Hindi version of the film grossed ₹140 million as reported by Box Office India, making it one of the year's top ten highest-grossing Hindi films. It was screened at many international film festivals including the Philadelphia Film Festival in 1996 where it was an audience favourite. However, the film caused considerable controversy upon release in India and abroad for its depiction of inter-religious relations and religious riots. It was banned in Singapore and Malaysia upon release. It was ranked among the top 20 Indian films in the British Film Institute's rankings. It won the Gala Award at the 1996 Political Film Society Awards (United States), Special Award at the 2003 Jerusalem Film Festival (Israel), Wim Van Leer in Spirit for Freedom Award -Best Feature, 1995 Edinburgh International Film Festival (Scotland) & Nargis Dutt award for Best feature film on National integration.
In 1996, American critic James Berardinelli rated the film 3.5 out of 4 and said, "Largely because of their limited North American appeal and dubious quality, Indian movies are routinely ignored by distributors. Occasionally, however, a worthwhile picture causes enough people to take notice that it becomes a favorite on the international film festival circuit. One such movie is Bombay, the fourteenth feature from celebrated director Mani Rathnam." He concluded, "Director Rathnam has shown great courage in making this picture (bombs were thrown at his house after it opened in India), which speaks with a voice that many will not wish to hear. Bombay recalls how forceful a motion picture can be."
𝟯. 𝗗𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗲 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟴)
Mani Ratnam had the inspiration for Dil Se from a Sufi song called 'Thayya Thayya' (the phrase is used as one of the songs) The two lovers are said to share the relation of God and devotee in the song. The film was first titled Ladakh - Ek Prem Kahani, but was later changed to Dil Se, as Mani Ratnam was of the opinion that a shorter title will have a stronger impact. The three protagonists are from the three corners of India, making a sort of a a literal cartographic triangle. While Meghna is from the north-east, Amar hails from Delhi. Preethi is from Kerala.
Dil se is Hindi language romantic thriller film set in the backdrop of the insurgency in Northeast India. Written by Ratnam and Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film is an example of parallel cinema & noted for its aspects of nonlinear storytelling, it was the final installment of Ratnam's thematic trilogy. It also marked Preity Zinta's film debut. Though the film was shot mainly in Hindi-language, director Mani Ratnam also dubbed and released the film in Tamil in the title Uyire.. ('Darling..')
Dil Se is said to be a journey through the seven shades of love that are defined in ancient Arabic literature. Those shades are defined as an Attraction, Infatuation, Love, Reverence, Worship, Obsession, and Death. The character played by Shahrukh Khan Radio broadcaster Aman Verma is attracted & infatuated by beguiling & mysterious Meghna, he passes through each shade during the course of the film. The film is a dramatization of the attraction between a character from the heart of India and another from a peripheral state and a representation of opposites in the eyes of the law and society.
One can also see shades of The Layla-Majnun theme in the film which is a story passed from Arabic to Persian, Turkish, and Indian languages. Majnun's story is that of a constant effort to woo Layla, wander the dessert surroundings upon facing rejection, consumed by her thoughts which turned to obsession, he ultimately faced a tragic end.
Amid moonlit desert dunes, there is a particularly stirring conversation between the leading pair; Amar reveals his love for Meghna's eyes – because of the world hidden behind them & hate for the same stunning eyes – because he can't see the world hidden behind them. Their unconventional and intense love flourishes amidst the political turmoil. Visually beautiful, passionate love that turns into obsession, soulful music, deft writing & direction, and artistic performances by the actors, help to bring the seven shades of love on celluloid quite convincingly. Dil Se is an unforgettable masterpiece.
Santosh Sivan's screenplay, Tigmanshu Dhulia's dialogues, Gulzar's lyrics and Rahman's music makes it a Contemporary Classic. Dil se is said to be one of Shahrukh Khan's best performances. As a love-lorn Amar, he convinces you to empathize and pray for a happy ending to his love story.
Mani, partnering with two other filmmakers – Shekhar Kapoor and RGV, came up with a new production house called India Talkies for Dil Se. Sadly, it was the first and last film produced by the company. Sameer Chanda (known for films like Guru, Omkara, Rang De Basanti and Raavan) and Wasiq Khan (known for his gritty realism in Anurag Kashyap films) were the production and art designers.Tigmanshu Dhulia was the casting director. Pia Benegal and Manish Malhotra were the costume designers.
Simran Bagga was Mani Rathnam's first choice for the role of Preeti Nair, Rani Mukherjee was then offered the role but she declined & Preity Zinta eventually accepted. The lead role of the militant was first offered to Kajol, who couldn't accept the offer due to date clashes. Manisha was subsequently signed.
The song "Chaiyya Chaiyya" was shot on top of the Nilgiri Express en route Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri, the train is particularly painted in brown for the song sequence. Mani, apparently did not have Malaika Arora in mind for the train dance, for which Shilpa Shirodkar was his first choice. After the team wasn't impressed with Shilpa's audition, they approached model Achala Sachdev, who could not adjust her dates. Malaika finally landed the part. Shah Rukh, who is usually prone to injuries, shot for the song without using any safety harness. Farah Khan had choreographed the song in 4 straight days. No camera tricks were used in the making.
Several action sequences in the film choreographed by Allan Amin were shot near Connaught Place, New Delhi, Rajpath and Old Delhi. Some of the parade scenes were shot during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of India's independence. The film's shoot, which happened in Himachal Pradesh, Leh, Assam, New Delhi, Kerala, and Bhutan, was completed in 55 days as everything was thoroughly pre-planned.
The intense political references of the film with the trials of the Assamese on the India-China border, the love story and the fact that it coincided with the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations became a major factor for its success overseas, particularly amongst the South Asian diaspora in the west. Even though Dil se performed poorly at the box office in India, the film today has achieved a cult following. It was a success overseas in the US and the UK becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the UK box office charts and it was also a hit in Japan. Even 2 months after its release in September 1998 the film was still screened on 5 screens, 5 times per day with an average of 3000 spectators across all screens in the Cineworld complex in Feltham, West London. The film won two National Film Awards while also receiving a special mention at the Netpac Awards. The film was included in Time Magazine's "Best of Bollywood" list in 2010.
Dil Se's soundtrack album, composed by ARR, became a huge hit for its era and sold six million units in India alone. The song "Chaiyya Chaiyya", based on Sufi music and Urdu poetry, became especially popular and the song has been featured in the film Inside Man, in the musical Bombay Dreams, and in the television shows Smith and CSI: Miami. The bass Guitar in Dil Se Re song was played by Guy Pratt, the Bass Guitarist of Pink Floyd post the Roger Waters era. For the song 'Jiya Jale, Jaan Chale' singer Lata Mangeshkar apparently had some problems reaching the higher octaves because of her age, and so ARR kept her voice as low as possible in the final track
After Iruvar (1997), Mani was all set to make Alaipayuthey with SRK and Kajol, and registered the title, Mast. But, after completing the recce, he dropped the film, as he was not happy with the script. After finishing Dil Se, he made the script of Alaipayuthey non-linear, and shot it as a Tamil film, which was remade in Hindi as Saathiya. SRK made up to this Hindi remake by appearing in a cameo.

2020.06.05 16:57 Fwoggie2 Supply chain Covid-19 update June 5th June

Good afternoon from the UK. It’s Friday 5th June.
Yes, it’s me again. I’m back, hello to one and all. Apologies for a dearth of supply chain posts of late; my workload exploded and then mid last week out of a clear blue sky I got made redundant, just 4 weeks before the company’s fathers day peak sales event. Make of that what you will because I am very confused as to what I did wrong or how I could have prevented it.
It’s a heck of a time to be made redundant in the UK; our prime minister Boris Johnson only yesterday warned of “many many job losses” to come whilst a mini voxpop of ex-chancellors (the job title for the head of our finance ministry) conducted by the BBC included a quote from Lord Darling (Labour) who thinks unemployment could reach levels not seen since the 1980s (link), a view also echoed by the Bank of England’s chief economist (link). For context as to what that means, at the worst point in March 1984 just over 3m people were unemployed which the independent office of national statistics estimates was 11.9% of the workforce (link). I guess I am the beginning of a wave (no oceanfreight puns intended).
If anyone else in the UK is in the supply chain / logistics game and also job searching, try your luck with

Several recruiters I’ve spoken to already all say that there are not that many jobs up for grabs at the moment but there’s been a surge of candidates onto their books. It sounds like it’ll be a bun fight for me. So far Amazon are thinking about an application from me for a transport program manager role whilst I’ve past the first stage (CV screening) for a supply chain role with Aldi. Aldi offered me a job about 2 years ago but I turned it down because it wasn’t until the last minute before they explained that it was a night shift role - that wouldn’t have worked with my then-fiance’s mental health needs.
For anyone job hunting both in the UK and beyond, if you would like to work for one of the top 25 supply chains in the world (as ranked by Gartner - an influential industry trends analysis company), the 2020 rankings came out here just over two weeks ago. I leave you to google the individual company career websites on that report.
If I missed out any decent UK recruitment agencies or search sites in the supply chain sphere please let me know (especially in the contracting space); I need a job fairly quickly.

Supply chain news in depth

The future of city centre last mile deliveries is in UCC’s, but it’s a tough nut to crack - Medium.com has an interesting case study from the Dutch city of Nijmegen. Big trucks are often used to deliver into city centres but cause various social problems - traffic jams from double parking in restricted zones, high levels of emissions and pose particularly high risks to pedestrians and cyclists. A new trend of UCC’s (Urban Consolidator Centres) has emerged to try to combat the problem. The idea works around having a cross docking operation on the edge of a city centre where trucks deliver from multiple retailers. At the UCC the orders are sorted and passed on to for final mile delivery by more suitable forms of transport including cargo bikes (examples here from Babboe here) or smaller delivery vehicles such as 2 tonne vans. Ford Transits or Fiat Ducatos are two examples of existing vans but new entrants offering electrical vehicles are posing a threat to the incumbents such as Street Scooter (link, the website is in German only). So far so good, but there are a lot of issues with even setting a UCC up; often they require significant amounts of land with good highway access and the buy in is required from the freight carriers (which will be reluctant in case of incurring increased costs).
Nijmegen’s Binnenstadservice has managed to buck the trend and make the UCC a success. Three critical success factors were identified; the operation was set up as a non-govermental organisation (NGO) meaning the trucking companies wouldn’t view it as a competitor, the truck companies have bought into the costs because it releases their trucks faster to return back to their own hubs for new tasks and receivers generate additional revenue streams including storage, home deliveries for bulky items, payments for collection of packaging waste for recycling and support for online retailers. Meanwhile local businesses benefited as well because the UCC provided them with additional delivery options including staggering large deliveries that would otherwise not be possible due to limited storage space on their own premises. Within the first three years truck kilometers had reduced by 5% due to the improved delivery efficiencies and studies have suggested that the total possible reduction could be as high as 32%.
Fast forward to today and there are now 10 UCC’s operating across the Netherlands, all servicing their local city. The question though is whether the success is translatable to other countries such as the US. Europeans value their city centres and the streets in their own right plus noise and particulate pollution problems are much higher up the political agenda than in US cities. UCCs are essential in the Netherlands because the government has set a target of zero percent carbon issues from cargo deliveries by 2025. Time will tell whether UCCs can be introduced elsewhere but without strong political support they are almost certain to wither and die.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the eighth studio album by The Beatles, released on June 1, 1967. It topped the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart for 15 weeks, and the UK Albums chart for 27 weeks. In 2003, and again in 2012, the album was placed at number one on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

"Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club band didn’t start out life as a “concept album” but it very soon developed a life of its own. I remember it warmly, as both a tremendous challenge and a highly rewarding experience. For me, it was the most innovative, imaginative and trend-setting record of its time." - George Martin
“The Beatles definitely had an eternal curiosity for doing something different,” says George Martin, producer of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Certainly, this album was entirely different from anything which had gone before, and although it has been much imitated since, it remains today a unique, epochal record one which revolutionized the entire recording industry and caused such vast repercussions that its influence will very probably be felt for as long as the music is written and performed.
The Beatles’ musical ideas progressed in a most tangible way with each album they recorded. Geoff Emerick, the recording engineer who with George Martin formed the imaginative team which translated the Beatles’ requirements onto tape, once totted up the number of hours put into the making of Sgt. Pepper and came up with 700. Please Please Me, the Beatles’ first album, was recorded in 585 minutes.
“The Beatles insisted that everything on Sgt. Pepper had to be different,” said Emerick, “so everything was either distorted, limited, heavily compressed or treated with excessive equalization. We had microphones right down the bells of the brass instruments and headphones turned into microphones attached to violins. We plastered vast amounts of echo on-to vocals and sent them through the circuitry of the revolving Leslie speaker inside a Hammond organ. We used giant primitive oscillators to vary the speed of instruments and vocals and we had tapes chopped to pieces and stuck together upside down and the wrong way round.”
The very end of the album typifies the advanced studio trickery applied throughout Sgt. Pepper. After the last droplets of the crashing piano chord of ‘A Day In The Life’ have evaporated, come a few seconds of 15 kilocycle tone, put there – especially to annoy your dog – at the request of John Lennon. Then, as the coup de grace, there is a few seconds of non-sense Beatle chatter, taped, cut into several pieces and stuck back together at random so that, as George Martin says, purchasers of the vinyl album who did not have an auto-return on their record player would say “What the hell’s that?” and find the curious noise going on and on ad infinitum in the concentric run-out groove.

THE SONGS
The recording of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band spanned 129 days, perhaps the most creative 129 days in the history of rock music.
The sequence of songs on Pepper is famous in itself, being – on the vinyl version – two continuous sides of music, without pauses between songs, or ‘banding’, to use recording parlance. But the lineup on side one, as first conceived, was different to how it finally evolved and was as follows: ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”; “With A Little Help From My Friends”; “Being For the Benefit Of Mr. Kite”; “Fixing A Hole”; “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”; “Getting Better”; “She’s Leaving Home.”
By suitably programming your compact disc hardware you’ll be able to hear the album as it was originally intended. Extracted from The Beatles at Abbey Road, to be published late-1987.

THE COVER... and inserts
The Grammy Award-winning album packaging was art-directed by Robert Fraser, designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth, his wife, and artistic partner, and photographed by Michael Cooper. It featured a colorful collage of life-sized cardboard models of famous people on the front of the album cover and lyrics printed on the back cover, the first time this had been done on a British pop LP. The Beatles themselves, in the guise of the Sgt. Pepper band were dressed in custom-made military-style outfits made of satin dyed in Day-Glo colors. The suits were designed by Manuel Cuevas.
Among the insignia on their uniforms are:
MBE medals on McCartney's and Harrison's jackets. MBEs had been awarded to all four Beatles.
The Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, on Lennon's right sleeve.
Ontario Provincial Police flash on McCartney's sleeve.
Peter Blake:
"This album sleeve was the first to feature printed lyrics and it was one of the first to have a gatefold sleeve. It was also the first to have anything other than a plain inner bag too, the first pressing coming in a slightly psychedelic sleeve designed by Simon and Marijke of the Fool. And we also had a card with the cut-outs, which I had originally intended to be a small packed with badges and pencils and such like. That was stopped because it would have caused EMI big marketing problems.'
The Beatles already had a cover designed by a Dutch group called the Fool, but my gallery dealer, Robert Fraser, said to Paul, “Why don’t you use a ‘fine artist’, a professional, to do the cover instead?” Paul rather liked the idea and I was asked to do it. The concept of the album had already evolved: it would be as though the Beatles were another band, performing a concert. Paul and John said I should imagine that the band had just finished the concert, perhaps in a park. I then thought that we could have a crowd standing behind them, and this developed into the collage idea.
I asked them to make lists of people they’d most like to have in the audience at this imaginary concert. John’s was interesting because it included Jesus and Gandhi and, more cynically, Hitler. But this was just a few months after the US furor about his “Jesus” statement, so they were left out. George’s list was all gurus. Ringo said, “Whatever the others say is fine with me,” because he really didn’t want to be bothered. Robert Fraser and I also made lists. We then got all the photographs together and had life-sized cut-outs made onto head-board.
EMI realized that because many of the people we were depicting were still alive, we might be sued for not seeking their permission. So the Beatles’ manager, Brian Epstein, who was very wary of all the complications in the first place, had his assistant write to everyone. Mae West replied, “No, I won’t be on it. What would I be doing in a lonely hearts club?” So the Beatles wrote her a personal letter and she changed her mind.
Robert Fraser was a business partner of Michael Cooper, an excellent photographer, so he was commissioned to do the shoot. I worked in his studio for a fortnight constructing the collage, fixing the top row to the back wall and putting the next about six inches in front and so on, so that we got a tiered effect. Then we put in the palm tree and the other little objects. I wanted to have the waxworks of the Beatles because I thought that they might be looking at St. Pepper’s band too. The boy who delivered the floral display asked if he could contribute by making a guitar out of hyacinths, and the little girl wearing the ‘Welcome the Rolling Stones, Good Guys’ sweatshirt was a cloth figure of Shirley Temple, the shirt coming from Michael Cooper’s young son, Adam. The Beatles arrived during the evening of March 30. We had a drink, they got dressed and we did the session. It took about three hours in all, including the shots for the center-fold out and back cover. I’m not sure how much it all cost. One reads exaggerated figures. I think Robert Fraser was paid 1500 pounds by EMI, and I got about 200. People say to me, “You must have made a lot of money on it,” but I didn’t because Robert signed away the copyright. But it has never mattered too much because it was such a wonderful thing to have done.

COLLAGE
The collage depicted more than 70 famous people, including writers, musicians, film stars, and (at Harrison's request) a number of Indian gurus. The final grouping included Marlene Dietrich, Carl Gustav Jung, W.C. Fields, Diana Dors, James Dean, Bob Dylan, Issy Bonn, Marilyn Monroe, Aldous Huxley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Sigmund Freud, Aleister Crowley, Edgar Allan Poe, Karl Marx, Oscar Wilde, William S. Burroughs, Marlon Brando, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, and controversial comedian Lenny Bruce. Also included was the image of the original Beatles' bassist, the late Stuart Sutcliffe. Pete Best said in a later NPR interview that Lennon borrowed family medals from his (Best's) mother Mona for the shoot, on condition that he did not lose them. Adolf Hitler and Jesus Christ were requested by Lennon, but ultimately they were left out. A photo also exists of a rejected cardboard printout with a cloth draped over its head; its identity is unknown. Even now, co-creator Jann Haworth regrets that so few women were included.
The Beatles' 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band has a widely-recognized album cover which depicts several dozen celebrities and other images.

  • Germán Valdés - was considered to appear in the first row, but he declined the offer and suggested to replace his image by a Mexican craftsmanship known as "Tree of Life". Ringo Starr agreed and placed it in the lower right corner of the cover

The final bill for the cover was £2,868 5s 3d (equivalent to £38,823 today), a staggering sum for the time. It has been estimated that this was 100 times the average cost for an al-bum cover in those days

NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS (UK) May 27, 1967
JACK HUTTON VISITS A …
Beatle listen-in
THE Beatles, innovators as always, last week bestowed a new experience on the pop scene -. the LISTEN- IN. They commandeered Brian Epstein's luxurious townhouse in Chapel Street, London, SW1, played their new LP, "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," at full volume and shouted pleasantly at their guests for several hours. Downstairs, a long genuine antique table groaned, as they say, under huge dishes of cold meats and vegetables served by white-jacketed waiters. To drink there was a choice of gazpacho, a cold soup, or champers. The cham-pers won handsomely.
YELLOW SOCKS
The " boys." as they are affectionately known by their management, were in fine fettle. Lennon won the sartorial stakes with a green, flower-patterned shirt, red cord trousers, yellow socks, and what looked like cord shoes.
His ensemble was completed by a sporran. With his bushy sideboards and National Health specs, he resembled an animated Victorian watchmaker.
Paul McCartney, sans mustache, wore a loosely tied scarf shirt, a striped double-breasted jacket, and looked like someone out of a Scott Fitzgerald novel.
They both spoke volubly about many things, such as the BBC ban on "A Day In The Life," one of the LP tracks.
Said Paul: "John woke up one morning and read the Daily Mail. The news stories gave him the ideas for the song. The man goes upstairs on a bus for a smoke. Everybody does that kind of thing. But what does the BBC say? Smoking? SMOKING? S-M -0 -K -I -N-G? "
Well, BBC, he was actually smoking Park Drive! Even people at the BBC do these things. So, face it, BBC!
"You can read a double meaning into anything if you want to. But we don't care if they ban our songs. It might help the LP. They'll play the other tracks. "It's exciting to see the way an LP goes. To see how many different things can be taken from it."
Both Paul and John laughed off the suggestion that "Sgt Pepper" might be their last LP as a group. "Rubbish." said Lennon, but he went on to confirm that their touring days were over.
"No more tours, no more mop tops. We could never hear ourselves playing properly. Anyway, what more could we do after playing to 56,000 people? What next? More fame? More money?
"We were traveling all over the world and couldn't move outside our hotel." Now they feel they still give themselves, via albums, to their public, but they don't have to pay so much.
Says Paul. "I even went on a bus from Liverpool to Chester the other day without much trouble. There was just a mustache involved.
"And nearly every morning I take my dog for a walk in Regents Park.
The musical ideas of Lennon and McCartney seem to be expanding all the time. These ideas encompass a whole spectrum of sounds - mechanIcal, orchestral, electronic, animal, vegetable, Mineral.
They are becoming less and less concerned with their own playing. "I don't practise," says John. "I only played guitar to accompany myself singing You could study all your life and become the best bassoonist in Israel. So what? I like producing records. I want to do it all. I want a machine that produces all sounds. Studying music was like learning French.
If there was a new method of learning music-yeah. But the present method is archaic."
"We were never musicians," agreed Paul "In Hamburg, we got a lot of practice. But reading music for us was unnecessary."
Paul conducted the 41-piece band heard on the banned track "A Day In The Life" and he felt initially embarrassed facing that sea of sessioners.
"So I decided to treat them like human beings and not professional musicians. I tried to give myself to them. We chatted and drank champagne."
John dislikes what he calls "factory musicians"
"Classical players are best on record. They can play anything. Jazzmen are the worst. They can only play from there to there." He placed his open palms two inches apart... and they all want to sound like Ronnie Scott or somebody else "
Lennon 's views are equally trenchant about jazz styles. He doesn't dig Dixieland and mainstream. " It's dying man - like the Black And White Minstrels.
"I like John Coltrane but I don't get to the clubs much because it's embarrassing. The so-called experts laugh at you - 'there's a Beatle in the audience folks. It's probably my blame, but that's what I feel."
However, he promised the MM he would go to hear Charles Lloyd's quartet when they play London in June 17.
And to prove It Lennon borrowed a pen and wrote CHARLES LLOYD in big letters on the back of his sporran.

MELODY MAKER (UK), June 3, 1967
"A hundred different directions at once"
The Maker takes the "jolly approach" of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
by Chris Welch
Now let boring controversy begin!
WHO are the Beatles' greatest influences? Some might consider them to be William Byrd, Richard Strauss and Ravi Shankar. We humbly guess at George Formby, Lonnie Donegan and an elderly lady schoolteacher image, locked deep in the Beatles' collective childhood memory. The Beatles have always loved telling a tale, sometimes sadly, sometimes with wry humour, often mixing depressing sentiments with a chirpy bounce in the grand music hall tradition. And odd women constantly crop up in Beatle song themes. It was Eleanor Rigby on the classic "Revolver" album.
JOLLY APPROACH
This time it's "Lovely Rita " on "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." Rita is a female traffic warden or "meter maid" for whom Paul McCartney (bass) expresses the desire to take out for tea. Rita is obviously one of those iron-lipped, jack-booted Femmes Fatale who stalk unwary motorists, and whose very iciness contains a sensual allure.
The novelty of an ode to a lady traffic warden is typical of the whole jolly approach of "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Whatever the influences at work on the Beatles band, the lads have brought forth yet another saga of entertainment and achievement so solid and inspired that it should keep the British pop industry ticking over securely for another six months at least.
Already several of the tracks on this 13-song album are being feverishly covered by other artists, from Bernard Cribbins to David and Jonathan.
It's all presented like one of those phoney "live" LIN with dubbed applause and laughter coming in at the oddest moments, the effect is used with subtlety and is not allowed to spoil the musical content.
Some astute listeners have concluded that the faintly self-mocking undercurrent that runs throughout might indi-cate this is the Beatles' last album. indicate
We ran only hope that phrases heard on the album like "we hope you enjoyed the show" are simply references to the work in hand.
From the title track, which has Paul blasting away some James Brown soul through to the final "A Day In The Life" which features John, Paul and a 41 -piece orchestra, song after song prove the Beatles - creatively speaking - are bursting into a hundred different directions at once.
Yet all the music retains the Beetle stamp of humour, sorrow, sympathy and cynicism.
For example, Ringo sings a deadpan vocal "With A Little Help From My Friends." "Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite" is a tale about a trampoline expert.
George entertains with some hot sitar music. and Paul does his George Formby bit on " When I'm 64."
'Goodmorning, Goodmorning" by John is an observation on the ritual conversation gambits of those who have nothing to say.
The Beatles' new album is a remarkable and worthwhile contribution to music. Now let the boring controversies begin!

DECEMBER, 1967 COLUMN (Robert Christgau)
Esquire
In case you've been in New Guinea or something, you ought to be told that the Beatles have a new album out. It is called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, and even before its release on June 2 it was the subject of all kinds of published and unpublished rumors. Afterward, the information barrage was overwhelming. Capitol Records sent out an extraordinary feature, spiced with terms like "modals," "atonality," and--egad!--"bowels" and casting aspersions upon the "Tin Pan Alley-spawned lyrical cliché." There were stories in Life (in which Paul McCartney, to the surprise of no one and the shock of quite a few, revealed that he had sampled the dreaded lysergic acid diethylamide; he was seconded quickly by John and George, but Ringo, lovely Ringo, has remained silent), Time (in which George Martin, the group's producer, who has a degree in music and is thus permitted to be a genius, was singled out as the brains of the operation), and Newsweek (in which the former kings of rock and roll were compared, unperjoratively and in order, to Alfred Lord Tennyson, Edith Sitwell, Charlie Chaplin, Donald Barthelme, Harold Pinter, and T.S. Eliot--and not to Elvis Presley or even Bob Dylan). The trades bristled with exciting little pieces that always seemed to contain the word "artistic." And in The New York Times, Richard Goldstein put the album down and was almost lynched.
Goldstein, who has had his own story in Newsweek, is the best-known critic of pop in the country. Like any rising star, he engendered the inevitable ressentiment, always masquerading, of course, as contempt for the phony, the sellout, etc.. I often disagree with Gold-stein, but a sellout he is not. He is unfailingly honest and about as malevolent as Winnie-the-Pooh. There are very few "pop critics" who can match him even occasionally for incisiveness, perspective, and wit. Goldstein was disappointed with Sgt. Pepper. After an initial moment of panic, I wasn't. In fact, I was exalted by it, although a little of that has worn off. Which is just the point? Goldstein may have been wrong, but he wasn't that wrong. Sgt. Pepper is not the world's most perfect work of art. But that is what the Beatles' fans have come to assume their idols must produce.
It all started in December 1965, when they released Rubber Soul, an album that for innovation, tightness, and lyrical intelligence was about twice as good as anything they or anyone else (except maybe the Stones) had done previously. In June 1966, Capitol followed with The Beatles--"Yesterday" . . . and Today, comprising both sides of three singes plus extra cuts from the English versions of Rubber Soul and Revolver. The Beatles (perhaps as a metaphor for this hodgepodge, which was not released in England) provided a cover that depicted Our Boys in bloody butcher aprons, surrounded by hunks of meat and dismembered doll. The powers yowled, the cover was replaced as a reported cost of $250,000, and then in August the American Revolver went on sale. That did it. Revolver was twice as good and four times as startling as Rubber Soul, with sound effects, Oriental drones, jazz bands, transcendentalist lyrics, all kinds of rhythmic and harmonic surprises, and a filter that made John Lennon sound like God singing through a foghorn.
Partly because the ten-month gap between Revolver and Sgt. Pepper was so unprecedented, the album was awaited in much the same spirit as installments of Dickens must have been a century ago. Everyone was a little edgy: Could they do it again? The answer: yes and no. Sgt. Pepper is a consolidation, more intricate than Revolver but not more substantial. Part of Goldstein's mistake, I think, has been to allow all the filters and reverbs and orchestral effects and overdubs to deafen him to the stuff underneath, which was pretty nice, and to fall victim to over anticipation. Although Goldstein still insists he was right, I attribute his review to a failure of nerve.
Plus, perhaps, a predilection for folk music. Sgt. Pepper, four months in gestation, is the epitome of studio rock, and Goldstein wasn't entirely wrong when he accused it of being "busy, hip and cluttered." It contains nothing as lovely as "In My Life" on Rubber Soul or "Here, There and Everywhere" on Revolver. But no one seems to care. The week after Goldstein's review appeared, Cash Box listed Sgt. Pepper as the best-selling album in the country, a position it has occupied all summer.
Meanwhile, Goldstein himself has become a storm center. The Voice, his home base, published a rebuttal by a guy named Tom Phillips, who works for the Times. (Now who's square?) Goldstein responded with a Voice defense of his review. (Title: "I Lost My Cool Through the New York Times.") Paul Williams, of Crawdaddy, complained that Goldstein "got hung up on his own integrity and attempted to judge what he admittedly [sic] did not understand." (What have you done for rock this week?) And the Times was deluged with letters, many abusive and every last one in disagreement, the largest response to a music review in its history.
The letters are a fascinating testimony to what the Beatles mean to their fans. The correspondents are divided about equally between adolescents and young adults, with age often volunteered as a credential. Needless to say, Goldstein is frequently accused of being Old. (For the record, he is twenty-three. And I am twenty-five.) One common complaint was that Goldstein missed the acronymic implications of a lush little fantasy called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." (Singers on a trip with pretensions?) Even more common is the indignant avowal that George Harrison's "Within You Without You" did not, as Goldstein averred, "resurrect the very clichés the Beatles helped bury," and that "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," as Sherry Brody, of Brooklyn, put it, "is not like other songs by stupid groups that say I love you and junk like that." (I hope I don't sound condescending. Miss Brody's letter is not only charming--she signs, "Please write back!"--but every bit as perceptive as many of its more ambitious competitors.) Of course, the clichés in "WYWY" to which Goldstein was referring were not "I love you and junk like that." They were "self-discovery" and "universal love," the kind of homilies that used to make the Beatles giggle, but that Harrison now seems to take seriously.
"WYWY" provides the most convenient launching pad for the textual analyses that almost everyone felt compelled to send off. One writer claimed that a book by William R. Shears (Ringo's persona on the record is "Billy Shears"), called Here It Is, is full of illuminating cross-references. A high-school freshman invoked the album as an example of "tmesis--the appearance of a poem to do credit to its words." Many saw the album as "an attack on middle-class values." Some writers were sure the Beatles had arrived at their current syn-thesis because, to quote a Juilliard student, "they have refused to prostitute themselves for their fans." But others insisted that Sgt. Pepper was "for the people."
The genius of the Beatles can be found in those last two contradictory suggestions because both are true. Few of their old fans could have anticipated their present course or wished for it. Yet the Beatles have continued to please more of the old-timers than anyone but they--and the old-timers themselves--could have hoped. They really started the whole long-haired hippie business four years ago, and who knows whether they developed with it or it developed with them? All those pages of analysis are a gauge of how important the Beatles have become to . . . us.
One song on Sgt. Pepper, "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite," seems to me deliberately one-dimensional, nothing more than a description of a traveling circus. It fits beautifully into the album, which is a kind of long vaudeville show, but I feel almost certain it has no "meaning." Yet one girl, "age fifteen," writes that it presents "life as an eerie perverted circus." Is that sad? silly? horrifying? contemptible? From an adult, it might be all four, but from a fifteen-year-old, it is simply moving. A good Lennon-McCartney song is sufficiently cryptic to speak to the needs of whoever listens. If a fifteen-year-old finds life "an eerie perverted circus"--and for a fifteen-year-old that is an important perception--then that's what "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" can just as well be about. If you've just discovered universal love, you have reason to find "Within You Without You" "great poetry." It really doesn't matter; if you're wrong, you're right.
One of the nice things the Beatles do for those of us who love them is charging commonplace English with meaning. I want to hold your hand. It's getting better all the time. Yeah, yeah, yeah. "Fixing a Hole," to which I alluded just above, is full of just such suggestive phrases. I'll resist temptation and quote only five lines: "And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right/ Where I belong I'm right/ Where I belong./ See the people standing there who disagree and never win/ And wonder why they don't get in my door." This passage not only indicates the interesting things the Beatles are doing with rhyme, skewing their stanzas and dispensing almost completely with traditional song form. It also serves as a gnomic re-minder of the limitations of criticism. Allow me to fall into its trap by providing my own paraphrase, viz.: "In matters of interpretation, the important thing is not whether you're `wrong' or `right' but whether you are faithful to your own peculiar stance in the world. Those who insist upon the absolute rectitude of their opinions will never attain a state of enlightenment."
Well, there it is; I've finally done it. Pompous, right? Sorry, I'm just not John Lennon. But like everyone else, I feel compelled to make Our Boys My Boys. The first thirty times I heard "Fixing a Hole," I just listened and enjoyed it, keeping time, singing along, confident that it was obscure beyond my powers to investigate. Then I noticed that all the interpreters were shying away from that song, or making an obvious botch of it, and I couldn't resist the challenge. Now, after several false starts that had me convinced for a while, I think I've got it. It's not surprising that their ideas are so much like my own. That's what they're saying, isn't it?
For, just like Sherry Brody, I have my own Beatles. As far as I'm concerned, "Fixing a Hole" is not like other songs by stupid groups that say I am alienated and junk like that. And I have other prejudices. I can't believe that the Beatles indulge in the simplistic kind of symbolism that turns a yellow submarine into a Nembutal or a banana--it is just a yellow submarine, damn it, an obvious elaboration of John's submarine fixation, first revealed in A Hard Day's Night. I think they want their meanings to be absorbed on an instinctual level, just as their new, complex music can be absorbed on a sensual level. I don't think they much care whether Sgt. Pepper is Great Art or some other moldy fig. And I think they are inordinately fond (in a rather recondite way) of what I call the real world. They want to turn us on, all right--to everything in that world and in ourselves.
What else could a journalist think?

Tl;dr
While most of the public’s attention remains targeted at the Central Government’s push to drive adoption of the Aarogya Setu app, we must remain vigilant when it comes to state level uses of health data during COVID-19 as well. The controversy surrounding the contract between the Government of Kerala and Sprinklr Inc. is being addressed by the Kerala High Court in the ongoing matter of Balu Gopalakrishnan and Ors. v. State of Kerala and Ors. The main questions raised pertaining to there being no safeguards against the commercial and unauthorized use of the health data of the citizens of Kerala by Sprinklr Inc. While an interim order dated April 24, 2020 provides some relief, it fails to address certain key issues. IFF has shared a representation with the Government of Kerala and an Expert Committee formed on the issue. In it, we have pointed out the lacunae in the order and have made specific suggestions on how best to resolve them. Our main recommendation is, in keeping with the ideal of competitive federalism, the Government of Kerala should develop a state level framework to regulate the collection, processing, storage, and security of health and related data during epidemic situations under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897.
What was the issue with Sprinklr Inc.?
The Government of Kerala’s contract with Sprinklr Inc., a US based company, aims to create an online digital software/platform to process and analyse data of patients and those vulnerable/susceptible to COVID-19 in the State of Kerala. The arrangement aims to set up a Data Analytics Platform which integrates data from repositories across the Government, agencies and from the field so as to meet the exigency of a massive influx of data due to the pandemic.
The controversy arose when allegations were made that the government did not follow due procedures in appointing Sprinklr and thereby risked the transfer of crucial health data of thousands of people to pharmaceutical companies. While this is a valid concern, it also highlights the lack of governance discourse related to fundamental risks to people’s privacy which should have been a principal consideration while determining contours of the arrangement. The Contract between the two parties fails to address these risks.
More specifically, the accompanying Non-Disclosure Agreement between the parties, states that the purpose of the contract is that, “the parties wish to explore a business opportunity of mutual interest and benefit”. This demonstrates a desire to keep available an opportunity to commercially exploit people’s sensitive personal information like their health data. Any such commercial use however can only be done after a system of legislative and independent institutional oversight is put in place. Such institutional oversight is lacking currently.
What did the Kerala High Court do?
The Kerala High Court to its credit did highlight that maintaining data confidentiality is key when processing the health data of citizens of the State. The Court has issued an interim order dated providing some intervening relief to citizens even as it deliberates on the issue. These are:
  • It mandated that a process of anonymisation be followed before sharing this data with Sprinklr Inc.
  • The Order directed that such data be shared with Sprinklr Inc. only after informing every citizen from whom the data is collected and obtaining specific consent from them.
  • The Order injuncted Sprinklr Inc. from breaching the data confidentiality of the data obtained from the citizens of Kerala and ordered them to not disclose the data to any third party.
  • The Order instructed Sprinklr Inc. to transfer back the data once the term of their contract with the Government of Kerala is completed.
  • The Court injuncted Sprinklr from advertising or representing or holding over to any third party/person/entity – of whatever nature or composition – that they are in possession or have access to any data regarding COVID-19 patients or persons vulnerable/susceptible to it.
However, there were some issues that the High Court failed to address, the most important of which is the auditability of their Order. In our representation, we have highlighted the lacunae in the HC order and in the Contract between the Government of Kerala and Sprinklr Inc.
The Situation in the United Kingdom is similar and we can look to how Civil Society Organisations have addressed this there to create a solution
On May 18, 2020 civil society organisations, privacy advocates and academic researchers including Article 19, Liberty, openDemocracy and Privacy International wrote a joint letterto the UK Health Secretary’s office. In particular the letter addressed a March 2020 announcement by the UK’s National Health Service to grant private-sector tech firms access to the aggregated health data of millions of UK citizens towards building a datastore collected to specifically respond to the coronavirus.
In it these disparate stakeholders urged the NHS to suitably clarify to the public, the following aspects, before commencing the development of the datastore:
  1. What is the need for such a solution? What problems does such an arrangement aim to solve by building the datastore? What alternatives have been explored?
  2. How is the datastore financed? Has the NHS considered the trade-offs? What do these considerations look like?
  3. How does this proposal shift the balance of power from the public to the private sector?
  4. Who has control over the data in these public private partnerships ? Who is most at risk and how are they protected?
  5. What is the exit strategy? For what duration is the data collected and what happens when that period ends?
  6. If the exit strategy depends on the pandemic ending, then what criteria are used to determine when the pandemic is indeed over? (i.e. when is the promised destruction of the datastore triggered?)
  7. What public facing documentation do you intend to provide describing this datastore and the various data sources?
  8. Will further use of the datastore by the Department of Health Care Services, or its partners, outside the scope as currently defined, be communicated with the public?
  9. What party do you intend to use for privacy compliance and security auditing of the system
The situation in the UK is similar to the current situation in Kerala where Sprinklr Inc. has been entrusted with the health data of the citizens of Kerala. In particular, in the current instance data has been shared with a private party, not even located within Kerala, towards building an unknown software/analytics platform, which may even be leveraged for commercial use.
Constitutional Federalism is the need of the hour
In an op-ed, Mr.Raman Jit Singh Chima, who is also the Chair of the IFF Board of Trustees, has pointed out that the ideal of federalism which is enshrined in the Constitution of India is being undermined by Disaster Management Act, 2005 notifications being issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. “Much of what the Ministry of Home Affairs is issuing in its orders under the Disaster Management Act impacts the powers of states and local bodies, as well as the fundamental rights of citizens.”
“Among the exclusively delineated areas of legislative and executive competence of States is the power and responsibility of public order and police.” Additionally the competence to legislate on matters relating to public health including collection and processing of health data is contained in the State List under the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution of India. Keeping these factors in mind, we believe that the Government of Kerala should create a state level framework to regulate their collection, processing, storage, and security of health and related data during epidemic situations passed through Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. This may be done by issuing regulations on the same under the state government’s powers under the same act.
We believe this presents the Government of Kerala with an opportunity to pass a framework which can allow for the responsible use of health data through ICT systems during epidemics/health crises. The framework may be applicable to both government actors and private parties as well. It would allow for adequate legal and institutional safeguards which suitably protect people’s privacy, whilst creating a legal pathway for data-side and tech based interventions as well.
Final recommendations by IFF
Finally, aside from the urgent need for a regulatory framework as indicated above, we urged the Government of Kerala to suitably address our various concerns with its arrangement with Sprinklr Inc. as detailed throughout the representation. In particular we urge them to:
  1. Application of the Kerala HC order should be verified by creating transparent systems of audit.
  2. The Kerala Government should prescribe a clear date of termination of the Contract with Sprinklr. They should also prescribe clear guidelines which can act as Standard Operating Procedure upon termination of Contract for complete extraction of data from Sprinklr.
  3. Adherence to best practices principles for collection and processing of health data which include currently existing frameworks such as the GDPR and the Supreme Court’s decision in Justice K.S. Puttaswamy vs Union of India.
  4. Finally, the Government of Kerala should use the questions asked in the open letter shared with the UK’s NHS vis-a-vis its datastore, as a template to deepen public engagement, understanding and dialogue on the project. Such engagement will help reduce privacy and security concerns and would also help people to share insights and suggest measures which may be taken for course correction on an immediate basis.

2020.04.30 13:46 Fwoggie2 Covid-19 update Thursday April 30th

Good morning from the UK. It’s Thursday 30th April.
“Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you're a thousand miles from the corn field.” - Dwight D. Eisenhower <-- It seems that's very true right now.

Virus news

Supply chain news in depth

Bringing Manufacturing Back to the U.S. Is Easier Said Than Done - the Harvard Business Review (always worth a read, I recommend investing 10 minutes in this article) explains that on-shoring (i.e. bringing back) supply chains into the US is not that straight forward. The challenge lies in a combination of how modern supply networks are structured and the operational metrics applied to manufacturers it explains, adding that taken together, the United States and other advanced industrial economies have evolved a highly efficient and productive product manufacturing-and-delivery system that provides them with a cornucopia of products at relatively low costs. Technology has become too complicated though and made it impossible to possess all the skills that are necessary in just one place. As a result, manufacturers have turned to specialists and subcontractors who narrowly focus on just one area — and even those specialists have to rely on many others. And just as the world has come to rely on different regions for natural resources like iron ore or lithium metal, so too has it become dependent on regions where these specialists reside.
Cont’d. The article drills down into the complexity in making a laptop computer - the TFT-LCD panels are made by a handful of Asian manufacturers in large, capital-intensive factories — the most recent of these cost more than $6 billion each to build and equip. They in turn have suppliers making the glass, polarizing film, connectors and display driver chips which are made in semi conductor factories around the world. The memory chips are made predominantly by three global specialists in their multi-billion-dollar factories, and the hard drives are made by two firms with factories in Thailand, Malaysia, and China. The microprocessor is generally made by either Intel or AMD. Intel produces chips in the United States and other locations, but sends them to Asia to be packaged. AMD has them made in Taiwan.in semi conductor factories around the world.
Cont’d. Swinging away from the sourcing complexities, further down in the article the issue of production efficiency is raised. Manufacturers are loath to install excess capacity (sometimes known as surge capacity) because it absorbs capital and is often idle - something that shareholders do not appreciate (I’ve flagged up an article in the past where 3M turned up their in-house surge capacity for N95 masks as far back as late January, way before much of the world had noticed the growing outbreak - they just didn’t have anywhere near enough of it to cope with a global pandemic). The article also explores the rise of lean inventory theories (the idea being you have as little inventory as possible because it’s inefficient to have too much and again ties up capital) plus consumer reluctance to spend more than necessary on products, even if they are “home grown”. The pandemic and trade wars together highlight the brittleness of our global supply chains and trading system. Managers should heed the lessons and build more resiliency into their operations the article sternly warns.

----

Just how big of a problem is the disruption in the US meat supply chain? - It’s big, says Jason Lusk (an agricultural economist and Professor at Purdue University and who periodically tapped by the mainstream US media - both left and right wing - for interviews). In a blog dated yesterday, he explains that “Poultry, hog, and to a somewhat lesser extent, cattle, production operates on a just-in-time basis. From the day a sow (a mama pig) becomes pregnant, a chain of events is set in motion that will result in a pig being sent to the packing plant in approximately 300 days. The well-orchestrated supply chain involves the coordination of many players operating in a timely manner. Once piglets are born, they move to a farrowing house for 3 weeks. Then, they are moved to another barn or farm in a nursery for 7 weeks. After that, hogs are moved again to growing or finishing barn for about 16 weeks. If the finished pigs, who weigh about 280lbs, are unable to head to the packing plant, there is no room in the barn to receive the new batch of pigs from the nursery. If the nursery isn’t vacated, there is no room for the piglets. All the while, new piglets are being born with nowhere to go. Thus, the closure of packing plants leaves farmers with no good options.”
Cont’d. The blog goes on to explain that the daily slaughtering/processing capacity of pork is approximately 500,000 pigs per day; with 40% capacity closed (and counting), that means 200,000 pigs aren’t being processed leading to a massive backlog of 4m pigs over a 20 day period. The US herd is apparently 77m, explains the professor. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the smaller processing plants can only handle 1% of the larger meat processing plants - in short there’s nowhere to divert the overflow of pigs to; the meat processing industry has become too centralised. Meanwhile, if you’d like a map of which pork processing plants are or aren’t yet affected, check this map out here. The latest plant to be affected is in Rock Island, Illinois; the County Health department there is confirming there’s a COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak at the Tyson meat processing plant in Joslin with two deaths and 92 cases among Rock Island County residents who work at the plant. The county health department is expected to have more firm case numbers on Thursday (source).

2020.03.13 16:23 132throwaway321 ThrowRA - I (26M) am not sure whether to marry my girlfriend (26F) of 4 years due to religion.

The title basically sums it up. I love my partner and she loves me. We've been in a relationship for over 4 years and in every way are perfect for eachother.
We come from similar backgrounds but I am Hindu and she is Muslim. We have discussed getting married in the past and there were no issues, we're both okay with keeping our own religions and living our lives to the fullest together.
However, more recently as we've discussed getting engaged or married soon, the topic of kids has come up and I'm not sure what to do. I have always been open about raising our kids equally; exposing them to both sides of their parents religions. However, my partner has explicitly said she wants the kids to be Muslim and that she can't have it any other way. She is fairly religious and she strongly believes her religion is the one true religion, whereas I am a lot more relaxed about this stuff and don't necessarily believe in religion per se (agnostic).
I don't know where to go from here. I've told her I'm okay with raising the kids Muslim as long as the kids can be exposed to my side too. However, I can tell she does not want the kids to be "confused with wrong religions". And to be honest, I just don't know whether I am truly content with having our kids raised Muslim and me being alienated from them as they grow older.
On top of that, she tries really hard to "show me the truth" about Islam and how it's the one true religion etc. I have nothing against her beliefs but I know it's definitely not something I could believe in fundamentally. She is okay with marrying me for me but, because she wholeheartedly believes her religion is the truth, she tries to show me as her loved one, the truth, and will always try to show me for as long as I live. I have explained I will always be relaxed on religion as long as I'm a good person from a moral standpoint - and don't see myself following religion too hard at all, ever. She will still try occasionally and urge me to look into Islam properly etc. I don't mind all this, I'm happy to do Ramadan etc, but it's just the kids that is really the deal breaker here. They'll need to pray 5 times a day as she is fairly religious but not super strict either (aka she'll miss praying sometimes, she's with me which is technically not allowed).
So reddit, what do you think I should do here? I would prefer our kids to be raised with both sides but essentially be raised with good morals and values and make the most of life rather than be super religious. I'm afraid I'll be alienated from the kids, afraid I'll be raising them with something I don't necessarily agree with and not being content.
TLDR Unable to marry girlfriend of 4+ years due to disagreement with raising our kids with a certain religion. I prefer a relaxed approach with both sides exposed equally but she only wants her religion. Everything else is perfect but this is becoming a deal breaker that I hope doesn't have to be.
EDIT - we were both born and raised in UK.

2020.03.12 02:34 IDreamtIwokeUp 100+ reasons to vote for Tulsi over Joe Biden

The Bloomberg candidacy was disastrous for progressives. Regressives like Amy/Pete/Joe/Tom attacked Michael as did the progressive media in the critical time period leading up to Super Tuesday. This allowed the regressive block to NOT fracture over infighting and to unite behind Joe Biden who was never critically attacked or analyzed.
It may now be too late...but I thought it would be fun to critically analyze Joe's positions in contrast to Tulsi's.

2019.11.03 16:04 xugan97 Refuting smears against Tulsi

There appears to be an immense amount of animus directed at Tulsi - she is over-scrutinized, persistently attacked, held to more severe standards, required to meet moving goalposts, etc. The vast majority of criticisms are not of policy, but rather ad hominem attacks of the type Guilt by association and its particular form, McCarthyism. In a third part, we look at genuine criticisms of Tulsi's positions.

Part 1: Guilt by association

Links to Hindu nationalists

The objection -
Tulsi is made out to be an agent of the Indian Hindu Right (the RSS, BJP and Modi.) The primary articles are:
Explanation -
Indian American supporters - Tulsi has often courted the Hindu and Indian-American communities. Fundraising off some religious or ethnic group is hardly unusual in the US. The part of the community that reciprocated most enthusiastically is a vocal, affluent, and well-organized group of Indian-Americans who are also fans of the Indian BJP party.
Tulsi is not associated with any Hindu nationalist group or ideology. She has attended events organized by American Hindu groups - these groups are little more than Hindu advocacy groups. She has made awkward attempts to distance herself from such groups, for instance, by skipping the "World Hindu Congress" in 2018.
Indo-US relations, or Why the BJP likes Tulsi - Tulsi has been involved in Indo-US affairs for a long time. She is a co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. She has met various Indian politicians of both ruling and opposition parties in multiple trips to India. The BJP's interest in Tulsi can be explained simply as an extension of positive Indo-US relations. Besides, there may be the perception that Tulsi is pro-India or pro-Hindu. Tulsi's foreing policy is neutral, and recognizes India's immense importance without being prejudiced towards India.
Are Hindu nationalist groups bad? Hindu nationalist groups are right-wing, but not necessarily disreputable. The genuinely ideological Hindu groups are: (1) BJP, (the ruling political party in India,) (2) Narendra Modi, (the Indian Prime Minister, the face of the BJP, and popular demagogue) (3) the "Sangh Parivar", (several Indian organizations that share BJP's Hindu nationalist ideology,) and (4) their American offshoots, supporters and fans.
Most of these groups are moderate, law-abiding and respectable. However, some specific groups are more extreme: they are known to have engaged in rioting and bloodshed, and Modi himself was once accused of the same thing. The American offshoots are little more than obscure advocacy groups with little or no connections to their hardline Indian counterparts.
Is Modi bad? - Not many understand what in the Gujarat 2002 riots. I believe that Tulsi does not either - she recently made a faux pas by defending with: "Do you know what instigated those riots?" The simple answer is that Modi was cleared by a Supreme Court monitored investigation, and never even indicted. This is an objective answer that all international leaders accept. However, a glance at Wikipedia or news reports of the time suggest culpability, and that is what liberals emphasize. It was with good reason that the West declared Modi a 'persona non grata' for a period of a decade after the event.
Modi is now pretty much considered to be squeaky clean and diplomatically important. In his two terms as Prime Minister, he has visited every country, met every political leader, and even addressed the US Congress and the UK parliament.
Tulsi on her funding:
The contributions I get from my campaign come from American citizens. What you're doing right now is levelling a criticism against American citizens who happen to be Hindus who are involved in our democratic process here. I'm proud to have support for my campaign from Americans all across this country who are Hindus Muslims Christians atheists Catholics Buddhists, all across the board. They understand and know that my allegiance to and my mission is to serve our country and to serve the American people. ... Tulsi Gabbard Shuts Down Brainwashed Consumer of Corporate Media
Tulsi on being partial to the BJP/RSS:
Both in India and here in the US, I have held meetings with members of both the BJP and the Congress Party. As a member of the US Congress, my interest is in helping produce a closer relationship between the United States and India, not just between the United States and one political party of India. I have no affiliation with the RSS. Sometimes people on both sides, for their own purposes, try to say I somehow favor, or am part, of the BJP or take photos of me at Indian events and circulate them for their own promotional reasons. But the fact is, I’m not partial to BJP, the Congress Party, or any other particular political party in India. ... Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu in the US Congress, on Modi, Hinduism, and linking Islam to terror

Links to white supremacists and Trump supporters

The objection -
It has been seen for a while that Tulsi receives support from the who's who of white supremacists, the alt-right, the right-wing media, and the Trump administration. For examples, see e.g. Why Conservative Media and the Far Right Love Tulsi Gabbard for President
Explanation -
Speaking to everybody regardless of their political beliefs is a major part of Tulsi's platform. Just as Bernie is able to unite all Americans around economic issues, Tulsi does the same on the cultural front.
In contrast, ideologically-driven Liberals will not concede an inch to the other side. They also think Trump is the entire problem, along with anyone or anything that enables Trump. That is why liberals are surprised and even angry that someone resonates with the other side as well.
Tulsi refuses to use alienating terms like "deplorables", instead flipping it around to #UnusualAmericans. Meghan McCain, on The View (6th Nov) said, "I think the reason why so many Republicans respond to you is that you don't treat us like we are garbage."
I have strongly denounced David Duke’s hateful views and his so-called ‘support’ multiple times in the past, and reject his support. ... Tulsi Gabbard denounces David Duke, rejects his endorsement.
I don't make my decisions on policies based on who agrees with me, or who disagrees with me or who likes me, who doesn't like me, what party they are a part of or anything else. And frankly the premise of the question is such that it creates the situation where I would be in a position of saying - Okay, well if David Duke or white supremacists are against regime change wars maybe I should be for them. If they are for protecting our environment maybe I should be against protecting our environment. ... video - Q&A
When I look out at our country I don't see "deplorables." I see fellow Americans people who I treat with respect even when we disagree and when we disagree strongly. ... October debate closing statements.

Cult business

The objection -
Tulsi appears to have a long association with a religious teacher called Chris Butler whose group has cultish features. A long hit piece written in conspiratorial undertones is: Tulsi Gabbard Had a Very Strange Childhood.
Explanation -
Tulsi has received initiation into Hinduism in the Gaudiya Vaishnava lineage (aka ISKON or "Hare Krishna") from Chris Butler. She continues to be a practicing Hindu to this day in the same tradition, and often shows up at ISKON festivals. The central text of that tradition, the Bhagavad Gita has been Tulsi's constant companion since her deployment to the Middle East. That copy of the book is also what she used for her swearing-in. It is no coincidence that her motto of "aloha" and "service above self" looks a lot like the Karma Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita. She is spiritual rather than strictly religious.
This spirit of putting love into action (karma yoga) is also the essence of what is called "aloha". Karma yoga (aloha) is central to the teachings of both the Bhagavad-Gita and the New Testament. Love isn't inactive: it’s not just a sentiment. Love is a motivating force that propels you into action. That's why I have made aloha a central focus of my campaign. ... My Spiritual Path
The spirit of karma yoga is nicely described by Mahatma Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Yoga inspires me to live aloha and treat everyone with love and respect. ... on Twitter
Chris Butler's reclusive group is reported to have cultish features - but nothing very unexpected for a 70's hippie-spiritualist setup.
However, the attacks on Tulsi herself are certainly "Hinduphobic", similar to the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was a Muslim pretending to be a Christian. It was left to Obama's opponent to point out that religious slanders have no place in an election for public office.

Links to dictators and authoritarians

The objection -
There are numerous articles like this one: Tulsi Gabbard Unites Putin Apologists, Bloodstained Modi, Genocidal Assad and the U.S. Far Right
Explanation -
Military interventions don't work - they extend indefinitely, and have unintended consequences for the region. It isn't an ideal way to be a force for good.
Those who opposed the disasterous Iraq war are not friends of Saddam - Tulsi likewise opposes the regime change efforts in Syria which are several covert operations and open interventions that have been going on a long time.
If an American citizen gave money, weapons or support to al-Qaeda or ISIS, he or she would be thrown in jail. Yet the U.S. government has been violating this law for years, quietly supporting allies and partners of al-Qaeda, ISIL, Jabhat Fateh al Sham and other terrorist groups with money, weapons, and intelligence support, in their fight to overthrow the Syrian government. ... Stop Arming Terrorists Act
Article one of the constitution gives Congress the sole power to declare war. Congress has not done so against the Syrian government. ... Syria has not declared war against the US or threatened the US. The launch of 59 missiles against Syria last year was illegal and did not meet any of those criteria in the war powers resolution. ... Tulsi Gabbard demands answers from Defense Secretary Mattis on attacking Syria
The pro-war propaganda of regime change is the exact same mentality that got us into the disastrous war on Iraq, Libya and now Syria, leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East, the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and costing American taxpayers over $6 trillion dollars. Tulsi Gabbard on Syria
Eisenhower was connecting those dots with the influence that the military-industrial complex has on leaders in Congress who are making decisions about how our money is spent and where our troops are sent off into battle. Tulsi Gabbard on Joe Rogan

Links to homophobic groups

The objection -
Hit pieces like this one - Tulsi Gabbard once touted working for anti-gay group that backed conversion therapy - make it seem as if Tulsi is an inveterate homophobe.
Explanation -
Tulsi's father was an anti-gay activist when Tulsi was young, and that is the cause of the controvery. Tulsi opposed same-sex marriage at this time. She was never at any point against homosexuality and never supported "conversion therapy."
Various articles that suggest that her views haven't changed are simply false in light of her long-held and unchanging position on the issue, genuinely dateable to 2011:
I realized that a constitutional amendment defining marriage - even the one I and most Hawaii voters had supported - was anathema to the personal freedom we enjoy in America. And so my positions evolved. ... Reflections on the Role of Government in Our Personal Lives
Marriage should be handled and defined by individuals, their conscience, and their respective churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, etc. according to the values and traditions of the various communities which make up the mosaic of our aloha state and country. ... Social issues.

Part 2: McCarthyist allegations

These criticisms arise from one central principle: Tulsi considers hyper-partisanship to be the main problem - she wants to put nation before party, profits and petty politics.
On the other hand, ideologically-driven liberals consider Trump to be the main problem. The #resistance are outraged that the election was stolen by an immoral and narcissistic upstart, while pragmatic liberals think that any Democrat would be an infinite improvement over Trump. The fear is that negligence will result in a repeat of 2016.
Therefore, they are interested in (1) impeaching Trump, and avoiding anything that would help Trump, including (2) external sabotage, and (3) internal dissension. Any anti-establishment candidate will attract hysterical criticism on these three fronts, and there is nothing one can do (or refrain from doing) that will deflect such criticism.

Discrediting the impeachment process

The objection -
Tulsi has opposed the impeachment from the beginning, going so far as to dismiss the Mueller report and repeat Republican talking points on the supposedly partisan process:
Explanation -
Impeaching Trump doesn't solve the larger problem of Trumpism and a deeply divided country. It is instead necessary that Trump be defeated in an election, with minimum divisive rhetoric.
I have long been concerned that pursuing impeachment, especially driven by partisan reasons, is really really bad for the country. You know our country is already so divided. Last night I was talking with a college student at Grinnell College and he was talking about how his uncle and and his cousin they don't even speak anymore because of political differences. Pursuing impeachment purely on partisan differences would be extremely divisive for an already divided country. ... Fortune Most Powerful Women - one-on-one (21st Oct)
The challenge before us today is that our country is very divided. Donald Trump must be defeated. But we must do more than just defeat Donald Trump. We need to deliver a win for the American people. We must stand united as Americans remembering that we are all brothers and sisters - that we are all connected. closing statements in the October debate (15th Oct)

The Russian angle

The objection -
Explanation -
Hillary Clinton has been painstakingly cataloguing the various reasons she lost the 2016 election - all underhand tactics. When she spoke about it again recently, she repeated the whole list of reasons, and kindly volunteered to identify the Russian actors of the current season.
The job of a "Russian asset" is to parrot "Russian talking points" or to run a spoiler campaign. Tulsi apparently does both.
"Russian talking points" are any geo-political observation that benefits Russia or simply a pacifist or isolationist foreign policy.
A spoiler campaign is either a third-party candidate that splits the party's votes, or persuades voters to stay home or to vote for the other side. Anyone who appears to "stoke the divide" is guilty of pushing for such a terrible result. Such a candidate is surely also a "DINO", or a "wolf in sheep's clothing", and would have joined the Republican party if he/she had even a shred of conscience.
According to experts on Russian interference like John Brennan, the Russians never fail to take advantage of an opportunity to sabotage American elections. They use a variety of methods including online bots, fake news sites, and material assistance to ensure the victory of their favored candidate.
This is a complex issue which generated many reaction and opinion pieces:
"Something is a Russia asset even if it is not intentionally advancing their interest. The Russians are very sophisticated. Ex-CIA boss Brennan appears to partly back Hillary Clinton's theory Tulsi Gabbard is a Russian asset
What we are now seeing is nothing less than a joint effort by the former secretary of state and her allies in the media (which very much include certain former high-ranking members of the US intelligence community) to vilify those like Gabbard who vocally oppose a new Cold War with Russia. ... The Demonization of Dissent
But what most needs thwarting is this archaic way of looking at foreign policy—as a Manichaean struggle for influence between the United States and its allies, on the one hand, and the forces of darkness on the other. The U.S. shares important interests with Russia—and, for that matter, with Russian allies Syria and Iran—and the sooner it recognizes that, the better. ... Running a third-party or spoiler campaign

The objection -
The DNC expects all candidates to rally behind the eventual nominee to present a strong front and avoid confusing and alienating voters. The establishment was pretty certain, at one point, that Tulsi would run as a third-party candidate: Gabbard stokes fears among Democrats.
Explanation -
Tulsi has said a dozen times that she will not run as a third party candidate, and that she is going to take it all the way to the convention. The intention is bring the Democratic party back to what it used to be - a pro-people, pro-worker and pro-peace party.
Is there any scenario in which you would run as a third-party candidate? No. It's incredible to me, honestly, how many times I get asked that question, even just over the last 72 hours, over and over and over again. And over and over and over again my answer is still the same. It's important to look at what I'm doing. I am calling out my own party and I am calling out what I have seen as as a corruptive influence in our party that's taken it away from being the party of the people that it needs to be. So no, I'm not going to run as a third party candidate. I'm running for the Democratic nomination to lead the Democratic Party, to take it back from those who have been advocating for waging more regime change wars, serving interests other than those the interests of the people. Our party should be the party of by and for the people, fighting for the well-being of every person in this country protecting our planet, and fighting for peace. ... Taking back the Democratic party (21st Oct)
The DNC also disparages Sanders for doing what Gabbard is supposedly doing: “fracturing the Democratic Party”, never mind that neither of these people is doing anything besides running for office. We are told that both of them have committed a moral trespass by presenting the American people with an alternative. ... Traitors of Journalism: Lisa Lerer, Character Assassin & Eraser of History
Democrats Should Abandon the Third-Party “Spoiler” Argument

Part 3: Tulsi's positions

Here, we cover allegations of Islamophobia, Tulsi voting with Republicans on the Middle-East, her progressive record, pro-Israel record and PAC/lobbyist funding.

Islamophobia - "radical Islamic terror"

The objection -
Tulsi demanded that Obama use the term "radical islam": Rep. Gabbard: Obama is misidentifying the enemy. This became quite controversial at the time, and Tulsi was accused of Islamophobia along with right-wing pundits who were trying to blame Muslims for terrorism.
Explanation -
According to Tulsi's analysis, the core of the problem of terrorism is the Wahhabi/Salafi/Deobandi flavor of Islam. This is an ultra-conservative, ultra-puritan, exclusivist, extremist, pan-Islamist ideology that is largely promoted by Saudi Arabia using their oil money. This ideology and its establishments have already set root throughout Asia and Africa. There is a madrassa-to-terrorism pipeline, with graduates from these madrassas more easily radicalized and trained join the nearest "freedom struggle" or the global terrorist network. Virtually every act of ideologically-motivated terrorism can be directly traced to this ideology. ISIS, Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Boko Haram, and any of the South Asian terrorist networks are founded on this ideology.
Some articles find a common thread of Islamophobia through all of Tulsi's positions - from her use of the term "Islamic terrorism", support of Modi, blocking Syrian refugees, opposing the Iran deal, voting against BDS, and possibly also her opposition to Saudi Arabia and Turkey. In reality, these are based on different motivations and analyses, and have nothing to do with Islamophobia.
For years, Tulsi has also voiced her strong opposition to Saudi Arabia’s state sponsored Islamist extremism. Saudi Arabia spends hundreds of billions of dollars to spread their Wahhabi/Salafi/Deobandi (WSD) takfir extremist ideology around the world through literature, media outreach, madrasas, etc, fueling the threat of extremist violence. ...Tulsi Gabbard on Saudi Arabia & Yemen

Islamophobia - voting along Republican lines on the Middle-East

The objection -
Tulsi's voting record has also drawn criticism for being anti-Muslim, and entirely in line with the Republican positions. She has blocked Syrian refugees from entering America, voted against the Iran deal, voted against the BDS, etc.
Explanation -
Tulsi advised that Trump against breaking the Iran deal, and said that she will re-enter the Iran
The Iran deal, while imperfect, has kept Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and kept the peace. I remain supportive of the agreement. ...Tulsi on Twitter (Sep 2017) (Endorsing Bernie Sanders' opinion on the Iran deal.)
Gabbard acknowledged there were “flaws” and “concerns” in the Iran nuclear deal, "…that should’ve been addressed separately while maintaining and upholding the Iran nuclear deal to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons. Instead, by the Trump administration pulling out from this deal, they’ve essentially given Iran an excuse to be able to restart this Iran nuclear weapons program. That makes us and the world far less safe. So, as president, I would re-enter the Iran nuclear deal." ... Tulsi Gabbard would re-enter the Iran nuclear deal if elected
Even if Tulsi's explanations may not be entirely convincing, it should still be clear that these are not Republican or Islamophobic positions. Moreover, it is likely that Tulsi's position on these issues is nuanced and evolving.

Is Tulsi a progressive?

The objection -
Criticism has come from the left as well:
Their main objections are:
Explanation -
A visual comparison of the positions of all the 2020 candidates shows Tulsi comfortably on the left: Where do the 2020 Democratic candidates stand on the key issues?.
Note, however, that Tulsi supports a variation of Bernie's M4A and GND: see the following two articles for a technical explanation:

Is Tulsi pro-Israel?

The objection -
Tulsi has been silent on Israel's atrocities, and is apparently in line with the Republican's blind support of Israel. See e.g. Tea With Assad, Hugs With Adelson: Tulsi Gabbard's Unique Views on Israel and the Middle East
Explanation -
On the two-state solution:
My vote upholds my commitment to maintaining and strengthening this alliance, as well as my long-held position that the most viable path to peace between Israel and Palestine can be found through both sides negotiating a two-state solution. ... Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Reinforces Commitment to Peace Through Two-State Solution for Israel and Palestine (Jan 2017)
On attending Netanyahu's speech:
Watching the spectacle play out, the politicizing all of this, and seeing how distracting it was and continues to be from the core and important issues. Which is why I felt it was important to go and listen to the Prime Minister of a country that has an ally and a friend of the United States. ...Dem: Why I decided to attend Netanyahu speech

Is Tulsi taking money from PACs and lobbyists?

The objection -
A Fox Business reporter suggested twice that Tulsi Gabbard sought donations from Wall Street executives:
Others have noted large corporate donations, including from Boeing and Lockheed Martin:
Explanation -
Tulsi's responses to the "Wall Street" events:
As is clear from the invitations sent out, I do not accept $$ from PACs/lobbyists. Some in media are apparently upset by the fact that there are business people in NYC who are against warmongers and support my message of ending regime change wars, the new Cold War, and nuclear arms race. By the way, I would love to have millionaires and billionaires join this campaign, and use their money for good, not evil. ... Tulsi on Twitter
It was not a fund raiser. There were no contributions or cover charges to attend. No contributions were received at the event as in my town halls. People were asked to join my campaign and contribute to spreading my message. It was filmed and footage will be released. Omeed organized the event, not the campaign. Atendees were not members of the club, they were guests and friends of the organizer. ... reply to Kim Iverson - Breaking Down the Tulsi Gabbard "Wall Street" Fox News Story
Tulsi did release the full video of that event: Discussion Hosted by Omeed Malik in NYC. It was a regular town hall with no separate message for the elite behind closed-doors. The host of the events later addressed all concerns in an educational and well-articulated discussion- Host of Tulsi Gabbard's 'Wall Street' event: Why I support Tulsi (29th Oct).
The opensecrets.org link in the HuffPost article can be used to see other donations by the same companies. It turns out that Tulsi is far down the pecking order in any election cycle for any donor, well below Bernie Sanders, even for the period when she was taking PAC money.

2019.09.29 20:41 rootslegge AITA for making my step daughter wash the unicorn painted across her face before we entered a Hindu temple?

From the UK, My family had planned a day trip to visit the biggest Hindu temple outside of India in London,UK (we are not Hindu but this temple allows guests to come and learn about their beliefs etc)
My step daughter (8) had gone to a party the day before and had a unicorn face painted across her cheek.
She usually has her bath in the evenings so her dad agreed that she could have a bath when we returned home from our visit to the temple, meaning she had yesterday’s unicorn still painted across her face.
I told her that she had to at least was her face as it would be disrespectful to enter the temple with face paint still on. She cried her eyes out as she wanted to keep the face paint on; my partner (her father) says I was being the arsehole by making her take it off and it was fine to go to the temple like that as she was just a child.
AITA?

2019.07.25 12:52 ChipotleBanana About the lore and Dawn Era

This is going to be somewhat incoherent as I'm not a native english-speaker and I guess a bit far-fetched.

I'm a nutter for Elder scrolls lore, particularly about the creation of the world, the Aedra and Daedra and the whole pantheon. I love this whole aspect of not having particular powerful "gods" that are solely responsible for the creation and their respective function in the world, but it being split up into this weird mixture of "betrayed" creators (Aedra) and "imprisoned" powerful demon-gods (Daedra). I've studied Religion sciences myself and still can't quite put a finger on the real life role model for this Pantheon. I guess it's a mixture from old greek and roman gods, with influence from old mesopothamic religion as well as Hindu and old Germanic paganism with a lot of fantasy influences like LotR and such. It's also not really easy to extract this in a singular answer as the "scriptures" of the ES-world often contradict themselves. But there is a particular aspect which may have an exact role model. The creation of the existence of this world, more specifically the mentioning of Anu and Padomay (Sithis, to be precise) could have been rooted in the epic poem "Paradise Lost" (it's even an item in Fallout 3).
"[In Paradise Lost] Chaos is a dynamic entity, simultaneously a place and a person. It is evil and terrifying in its indefinable shapelessness and immensity—“formless infinite” —and in its destructive potential, while at the same time it is recognized as the residuary of good first matter. It is submissive to God but always suggests subversive tendencies. " (https://link.springer.com/chapte10.1057/9781137007001_3)
And then there is the partner in crime in Milton's poem - Night.
"Similarly Night is called 'unoriginal' (X.477), which can be read as both 'derived' and 'without origin', the second reading gaining force when we remember he is also 'uncreated' (II.150). " (https://darknessvisible.christs.cam.ac.uk/characters/chaos_and_night.html)

I mean, it isn't a foreign concept to have a personified dichotomy of primordial forces of stasis vs. change, light vs. dark and so on. But this part seemed to strike a distinct connection for me.

Does anyone have more or even more specific clues about the whole "creation of the lore"?
