2020.09.19 19:51 Acceptable-Fox-9752 A crucifix with Protestant-ish features??

I was given a beautiful olive wood crucifix that contains in it a few small things from the Holy Land - frankincense blessed in the Church of the Nativity, stones from Jerusalem, olive leaves from Jerusalem, and flower petals from the Garden Tomb. I would like to put this crucifix in my icon corner, but I worry about the petals from the Garden Tomb. I know we (and archaeologists) don't recognize it as the tomb of Christ or as a holy site generally. My intuition is it's fine to put it up and acknowledge that the petals aren't from a holy site, just from an ancient tomb that might be a bit like that of Jesus. What do you guys think?

2020.09.19 19:01 tengrrl Resources: In the Coalition Archives: The Feminisms & Rhetorics Collection

View this email in your browser
Hello Coalition,
I am pleased to share this recent CFSHRC blog post on behalf of Alexis Ramsey-Tobienne, Coalition Archivist & Historian. Enjoy!
If you, like me, are missing the community of our C’s Wednesday night SIGs or are pining for the quick hallway conversations between sessions at Fem/Rhet, I invite you into the CFSHRC archive where we have a collection devoted to the Fem/Rhet conferences. From the program for the inaugural conference at Oregon State University in August of 1997 to the student-created archive for the latest conference at James Madison, the Coalition archives has some great materials to browse.
To access the archives, please visit the finding aid on the archives page of the Coalition website. The finding aid is regularly updated with processed materials from the collection. If you are interested in any materials, please contact Alexis Ramsey-Tobienne, the current archivist and historian for the Coalition to access the holdings ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])).
In addition to programs from nearly every year, the collection also features planning documents and FAQ for institutions considering hosting Feminisms and Rhetorics Conferences, conference hosting proposals, emails among liaison committee members, book exhibit information, and photographs and videos from various conferences.
The collection takes us through the evolution of the conference and the Coalition, as we see in the variation of themes:
  • From Boundaries to Borderland (Oregon State University, 1997) with plenaries including Jacqueline Jones Royster on “Borderlands and Common Spaces: Care and Maintenance in our Neutral Zone” and Nancy Tuana “Fleshing Rhetoric: Speaking Bodies/ Reconfiguring Sex/Gender.”
- Cross-Disciplinary Sites of Feminist Discourse (Univeristy of Minnesota, Minneapolis, 1999) with exhibits from a variety of feminist art collectives, bookstores, and non profits in Minneapolis. The conference featured Voices of Women Writers, a series of readings by novelists and non-fiction writers Judith Katz, Barrie Jean Borrich, Sandra Benitez, Aurora Levins Morales, and the Tight Spaces Collective.
- Millikin University, 2001.There was no stated theme for this conference. Featured Keynote speakers at this conference included Krista Ratcliffe “Silence and Listening: Rhetorical Arts for “Resisting Disciplines,” Elizabeth Birmingham “Marion Mahony and Milliken Place: Gender, Erasure, and Architectural Attribution,” Lisa Ede and Andrea Lunsford “Feminism(s) and the Politics of Style” (read by Nancy DeJoy), Elizabeth Flynn “What’s in a Name?: Reconfiguring Feminist Traditions,” Joyce Irene Middleton “The Rhetorical World of Black Women Filmmakers: Camille Billops, Julie Dash, and Cheryl Dunye,” Nan Johnson “A Feminist Writes the History of Rhetoric: What does THAT Mean,” and Susan Applegate Krouse “Transforming Images: American Indian Women’s Narratives in Academia” and Jacqueline Jones Royster and Ann Marie Mann Simpkins “Marking Trails: Race, Gender, and Culture in the History of Rhetoric.”
- Intersections: Critical Locations of Feminist Rhetorical Practice (Ohio State University, 2003), where the introductory note highlighted participants from “46 states and 10 nations.” Featured panels included Feminist Historiography with Patricia Bizzell, Cheryl Glenn, Laura Gurak, Winifred Bryan Horner, Jan Swearingen, Kathleen Welch; “Feminist Pedagogy” with Nancy DeJoy, Lisa Ede, Hildy Miller, and Krista Ratcliffe; “Clearing the Clouds, Learning to Speak, and I Got Thunder” with Jacqueline Jones Royster, Shirley Wilson Logan, and Joyce Irene Middleton; and plenary addresses from Andrea Lunsford “All Available Means of Persuasion for Feminists,” Marcia Farr “Speech Play and Verbal Art: New Perspectives on Feminist Rhetorics” and Susan Jarrett “A Sustaining Meloncholy: Feminist Theories and Public Rhetorics.”
- Affirming Diversity (Michigan Tech, 2005) with Keynotes including Min-Zahn Lu “Class Matters: Gender, Critical Literacy, and the Global Restructuring of Capitalist;” Donna Harraway “We Have Never Been Human: Companion Species in Naturecultures;” Jacqueline Jones Royster “Gender, Race, and Nation;” Andrea Lunsford “Women Against War;” and Helena Maria Viramontes reading from selected works.
- Civic Discourse (University of Arkansas–Little Rock, 2007) where the proposal called for presentations beyond the read-aloud academic essays to more interactive and alternative formats and included a note for graduate students on how to approach the conference. Featured panels included those from outside of academia: “The Women of Central High” and another “When Worlds Collide: Feminist Art vs. Images of Empire;” Wendy Kline “Bodies of Evidence: Activists, Patients, and the FDA Regulation of Depo Provera; Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders, former US Surgeon General, and a panel on Civil Rights/Civic Discourse. Keynotes included: Malea Powell “Making NDN Culture: American Indian Women Civic Materialities;” a welcome address from Krista Ratcliffe “Unwilling to Listen: How do you Engage in Civic Dialogue When Each Side Isn’t Civil?” a moderated panel with each of the past conference chairs; Carol Mattingly “A Habit of Civic Engagement: Nineteenth-Century Nuns Dispelling Prejudice; Jessica Rayman “Copyright, Feminism, and Digital Discourse; Hui Wu “Whose Feminism is It? The Rhetoric of Post-Mao Chinese Women Writers; Shirley Wilson Logan “Daisy Bates and Ida Wells: Talking Across Gender.” Another highlight was a reception and tour at the Clinton Presidential Archives.
- Enabling Complexities: Community/Writing/Rhetoric (Michigan State University, 2009). Featured speakers included Gwendolyn D. Pough “On Prince Charming and the Strong Black Woman: Race, Representation, Rhetoric and Romance;” Ceclia Rodriquez Milenas “My English is Not Very Good Looking–Accents and Identities;” Rochelle L. Harris “From Zombies to Writing Groups and Motorcycle Rallies to Memoir: My Search for the Fifth Trope of Rhetoric;” Resa Crane Bistro “Diagnosing Intergenerational Post Traumatic Disorder: Or, a Fat Old Indian Woman Fistfights the American Psychiatric Association in East Lansing;” Terese Guinsatao Monberg “Pinay Peminists: Listening for New Locations and Re/visions of Rhetorical Theory;” and Dora Ramirez-Dhoore “Racial and Scientific Rhetoric in Eco-Political Matters: Third World Women Workers in Helena Maria Viramontes Under the Feet of Jesus _and Alicia Gaspar de Alba’s _Desert Blood.” This conference also opened with a community event “A Legacy of Conflict and Possibility: an Examination of Racism Between Women of Color and White Women” hosted by M. Carmen Lane from the Lane-Leota Group.
- Feminist Challenges or Feminist Rhetorics?: Locations, Scholarship, and Discourse (Minnesota State Mankato, 2011). Keynote speakers included Gayle Salamon, AlisonPiepmeier, as well as a number of keynote roundtables from Kate Ronald, Eileen Schell and Rebecca Dingo who discussed who feminist methodologies and practices. Mumbi Mwangi and Kyoko Kishimoto discussed Women of Color Feminisms, and Sondra Perl and Betsey Sargent revisited the intersections between felt sense, the body and feminism in pedagogy. A lunch time keynote roundtable included Jenn Melby, owner of Mankato’s Coffee Hag, and a cohort of local feminist and LGBTQI business owners.
- Networks and Connections: Feminisms, Rhetoric, and Local/Global Communities (Stanford University, 2013). The conference program is not currently in the archives, but it is available here.
- Women’s Ways of Making (Arizona State University, 2015). Currently the archive does not have the conference program in its processed holdings, but it is available here. This folder holds a variety of materials related to securing publisher tables.
- Rhetorics, Rights, (R)evolutions (Dayton University, 2017). Currently the archive does not have the conference program in its processed holdings, but the program is available here.
- Redefining Feminist Activism (James Madison University, 2019). Currently the archive does not have the conference program in its processed holdings, but the program is available here.
The programs and accompanying materials from the collection also highlight the importance of community engagement to the conference–with exhibits featuring local non-profits (such as at University of Minnesota–Minneapolis) or with community leaders offering plenaries (such as at University of Dayton) or with a roundtable with local feminist business owners (such as at the University of Minnesota Mankato). The welcome message from the 2009 Michigan State conference directors Malea Powell and Sue Webb and conference assistant co-directors Kendall Lion and Jennifer Sano makes this connection explicit: “we have created a conference that both examines the knowledge work we already do as scholars and community activists and that creates more space for the complicated, difficult work that must follow if we want to adequately reflect the deep structure of connections/intersections/overlaps that are critical to our shared future.” They then continue by encouraging participants to “reach across the category” they identify with to forge new connections and new possibilities.
The idea of blurring binaries was again present at the ASU conference in 2015 where organizers expressly worked to “collapse several impoverished binaries: mind/body, produceconsumer, passive recipients/active consumers, public/private, male/female, and craft/art.” The conference featured artists, weavers, knitters, and other artisans and crafters who presented alongside the more traditional conference format to showcase different ways of making. That said, throughout all the conference programs, you see the conference encouraging broad understanding of what it means to participate in the conference–from locals housing grad students, to online reading rooms, to performing in plays. The blurring of practice and theory was also evident during the Dayton Conference where attendees helped to raise funds for Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria.
A long-standing feature of the conference that we can observe evolving through the conferences are the shared meals. From the early conferences where nearly all the meals were shared, to the more recent iterations of the conference with fewer shared meals and more emphasis on shared experiences. These experiences include the archival collection highlighted at the 2019 JMU Conference featuring exhibits on the ERA and women’s activism on campus, to the opening cocktail and hors d’oeuvres celebration at the 2017 Dayton Conference featuring a rare book collection, that included first editions of noted feminist texts, to the performance of the award-winning Scottsdale Chorus at the 2015 ASU Conference, to the catered dinner in the Rodin Sculpture Garden at the 2013 Stanford Conference, to the visit to the Clinton Presidential Library during the 2007 ULAR Conference. For me, first as a master’s student and now as a professor, these moments beyond the presentation rooms where I got to metaphorically (and sometimes literally) play with fellow conference attendees is where the magic of feminisms and rhetorics happen.
The Feminisms and Rhetorics Collection is a reminder that the hard work of feminist rhetorical theory, practice, teaching, and learning can be extended and enriched when we gather to ask critical questions of ourselves and each other in a spirit of inclusivity and encouragement

2020.09.19 12:48 WinifredLisa Almighty God Led Me Onto the Path of Obtaining Cleansing

I came to Singapore on my own in 2007 to try to make a living. Singapore is really hot year-round, so I was sweating buckets every day at work. It was utterly miserable, and on top of that I was in a completely unfamiliar place without any family or friends—life felt so dull and tedious. One day in August, I received a gospel leaflet on my way home from work which read: “But the God of all grace, who has called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that you have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you” (1 Peter 5:10). I felt warmth in my heart upon reading these words. After that, I went to church with a brother, where the enthusiastic reception from the brothers and sisters, who asked after my well-being, made me feel the warmth of family which I hadn’t had in a long time. My eyes suddenly welled up with tears—I felt just like I had come home. From then on, every Sunday going to church was a must for me.
I was baptized that December, officially stepping onto the path of faith. In one church service, I heard the preacher reading from chapter 18, verses 21–22 of Matthew: “Then came Peter to Him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus said to him, I say not to you, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” Hearing this, I thought to myself: “How can the forgiveness and patience of the Lord Jesus be so great? He forgives people seventy times seven times. If men could really do this, then there would be no fighting, but just love and warmth!” I was very moved by the Lord’s words, and I resolved to act in accordance with His teachings.
Two or three years later, my boss put me in charge of managing a construction site, so I put all my energy into work and stopped attending gatherings as regularly. I was later introduced by a friend to a Mr. Li, a business financier, and we set up a construction company together. I was very happy, and was determined to really throw myself into it. I then got totally into the vortex of money and stopped going to church for gatherings altogether. I wanted projects to be done well to win others’ praise for my competence, so I became more and more demanding of workers. I would reprimand them whenever I saw that they had done something that wasn’t right or wasn’t up to my requirements. The team leader was often brought to tears by my abuse. The workers were afraid whenever they saw me and would even hide from me. Even people who used to be good friends became cold toward me and no longer wanted to confide in me. Seeing this was very distressing. The Lord Jesus instructs us to forgive others seventy times seven times, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. However, I had not put this into practice in the slightest, not even once. How was that being a Christian? I knew that I was sinning and I often prayed to the Lord, confessing and repenting. I resolved to change. But whenever something came up, in spite of myself I would still sin. I was really vexed.
In August of 2015, we suspended business operations because the company was not doing well, and I went back home. Depressed and miserable, I just drank and gambled all day. When my wife told me I should stop drinking, I would just yell at her: “It’s my money, I earned it, and I’ll spend it however I want….” There was nothing she could do, so she would just sit there and cry. Each time that I gave vent to my anger, I felt remorseful and I hated myself, but I just couldn’t rein myself in. By that time I had completely lost all Christian propriety; my behavior and conduct were entirely the same as a nonbeliever’s.
In my pain and helplessness, I went back to church to attend gatherings again. Over that period, I was constantly praying to the Lord Jesus: “Oh, Lord! I’ve done so many things I didn’t want to do, I’ve said so many things that hurt others. I’ve been living in sin and rebelling against You. Each time that I sin, I’m remorseful and really hate myself, but I can’t ever control myself! I confess my sins by night, but then by day I fall back into my old ways and sin again. Oh, Lord! I beseech You to save me, what can I do to break free from sin?”
On New Year’s Day of 2016, I set foot on American soil—I had come to New York to make some money. I kept going to church in my free time and also joined a prayer group, reading the Bible and praying with other brothers and sisters. There, I became acquainted with a sister called Qinglian. One day, Sister Qinglian gave me a call to say there was some good news she wanted to share with me. I said, “What’s the good news?” She said, “There’s a missionary visiting. Do you want to go hear her speak?” I said, “Great! Where is it?” She then arranged a time for me to go to her house.
I went to Sister Qinglian’s house on that day. Several other brothers and sisters were there, and after meeting and exchanging greetings, we all began to discuss the Bible. Sister Zhao’s fellowship was very enlightening and it was really edifying for me. I then told her about my constant sinning and confessing, and the pain of being unable to rid myself of sin, and I sought her help. In fellowship, she said that even after we have begun to believe in the Lord, we still sin all the time, and that living life in the never-ending cycle of sinning by day and confessing by night, never able to rid ourselves of it, was not a problem that afflicted me alone. Rather it was a problem shared by all believers. Sister Zhao then had us watch a video of some recitations of God’s words. These were the words: “Changing man’s disposition starts with knowledge of his substance and through changes in his thinking, nature, and mental outlook—through fundamental changes. Only in this way will true changes be achieved in the disposition of man. Man’s corrupt disposition stems from his being poisoned and trampled upon by Satan, from the egregious harm that Satan has inflicted upon his thinking, morality, insight, and sense. It is precisely because the fundamental things of man have been corrupted by Satan, and are utterly unlike how God originally created them, that man opposes God and does not understand the truth. Thus, changes in man’s disposition should begin with changes in his thinking, insight, and sense that will change his knowledge of God and his knowledge of the truth” (“To Have an Unchanged Disposition Is to Be in Enmity to God” in The Word Appears in the Flesh).
I was really moved, thinking, “Isn’t it me they are talking about? I always look down on others, scolding them for this or yelling at them for that. I lack morality and reason, and have lost any vestige of saintly decorum.” These words all pierced me to the core of my being. I had never read anything like it before, nor had I heard any preacher deliver that kind of sermon. I had been distressed by my constant sinning, but still hadn’t been able to break free from the constraints of sin. These words showed me the path to leaving sin behind, and I marveled: This is so well put. Who could have written them?
Sister Zhao told me that this was the word of God, that the Lord Jesus had already returned in the flesh, and He was currently doing the work of judging and cleansing people through His word in the last days. I simply didn’t dare believe my own ears. What believer is not longing for His return? Suddenly hearing this news of the Lord’s return, I was so excited that I was somewhat at a loss: Had the Lord truly returned? I eagerly asked her to continue with her fellowship. Sister Zhao said, “The Lord Jesus has truly returned, and He is Almighty God—the incarnated Christ in the last days. He has expressed all truths to purify and save mankind, and has started to do the work of judgment beginning with the house of God. He will thoroughly save us from the domain of Satan, who have been bound up by our satanic nature and living in sin from which we cannot extricate ourselves. Ultimately we’ll attain full salvation and be obtained by God. In the Age of Grace, the Lord Jesus only performed the work of redemption; He redeemed us from sin and absolved our sins so that we would no longer be condemned under the law. Although the Lord absolved our sins, He did not pardon our satanic nature or our satanic dispositions. The arrogance, craftiness, selfishness, greed, maliciousness, and other corrupt dispositions still exist within man. These are things which go deeper and are more stubborn than sin. It is precisely because these satanic dispositions and satanic nature have not been resolved that we continue to sin in spite of ourselves, and we even commit sins that are more serious than violating the law. As for the Pharisees back then, wasn’t the reason why they resisted and condemned the Lord, to the point where they even crucified Him, that man’s sinful nature had not been resolved? In fact, we all have a deep appreciation of this because we are ourselves controlled by these corrupt dispositions. So, we often tell lies, act deceitfully, are arrogant and conceited, and reprimand others condescendingly. We know clearly that the Lord demands that we pardon others and love our neighbor as ourselves, and yet we do not put this into practice. People scheme against each other, scramble for fame and gain, and are unable to get along harmoniously. During times of illness, natural or man-made disasters, we still blame God, and we even deny or betray God. These facts show that if we do not resolve our satanic nature and satanic dispositions, then we will never be able to escape this circular life of sinning and confessing, then confessing and sinning. Therefore, to thoroughly save man from sin, it is necessary for God to perform a stage of His judgment and cleansing work to resolve our sinful nature. This is the only way we can be purified and fully saved by God, and be obtained by Him. Let’s read a few more selections from Almighty God’s words and you’ll understand.”
Sister Zhao opened up the book of the word of God and began to read: “For all that man may have been redeemed and forgiven of his sins, it can only be considered as God not remembering the transgressions of man and not treating man in accordance with his transgressions. However, when man, who lives in a body of flesh, has not been set free from sin, he can only continue to sin, endlessly revealing his corrupt satanic disposition. This is the life that man leads, an endless cycle of sinning and being forgiven. The majority of men sin in the day only to confess in the evening. This way, even if the sin offering is forever effective for man, it will not be able to save man from sin. Only half the work of salvation has been completed, for man still has a corrupt disposition” (“The Mystery of the Incarnation (4)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). “Though Jesus did much work among man, He only completed the redemption of all mankind and became man’s sin offering; He did not rid man of his corrupt disposition. Fully saving man from the influence of Satan not only required Jesus to become the sin offering and bear the sins of man, but it also required God to do even greater work to rid man completely of his satanically corrupted disposition” (Preface to The Word Appears in the Flesh). “The sins of man were forgiven, and this is because of the work of God’s crucifixion, but man continued to live within the corrupt satanic disposition of old. This being so, man must be completely saved from his corrupt satanic disposition, so that his sinful nature may be completely extirpated, never to develop again, thus enabling the disposition of man to be transformed. This would require man to grasp the path of growth in life, to grasp the way of life, and to grasp the way to change his disposition. Furthermore, it would require man to act in accordance with this path, so that his disposition may gradually be changed and he may live under the shining of the light, so that all that he does may be in accord with the will of God, so that he may cast away his corrupt satanic disposition, and so that he may break free from Satan’s influence of darkness, thereby emerging fully from sin. Only then will man receive complete salvation” (“The Mystery of the Incarnation (4)” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). Sister Zhao said in fellowship: “Now that we’ve read these words of God, we understand why we are always bound by our satanic nature and unable to rid ourselves of sin, right? During the Age of Grace, God only performed the work of redemption, not the end-time work of judging, cleansing, and thoroughly saving people. So no matter how we confess our sins and repent, how we try to conquer ourselves, how we fast and pray, we will not be able to achieve freedom from sin. That means that if we want to break free of the bondage and control of our sinful nature, just undergoing the Lord Jesus’ work of redemption is still not enough. We must accept the work of judgment done by the returned Lord Jesus. This is because in doing His judgment work of the last days, God expresses many aspects of truth to judge and expose man’s satanic nature of resisting and betraying God. He reveals God’s righteous, holy, unoffendable disposition, allowing mankind to clearly see the truth of his own profound corruption by Satan through the judgment and chastisement of God’s words, to truly know God’s righteous disposition that does not tolerate man’s offense, to develop a God-fearing heart, thus transforming and purifying man’s satanic disposition and saving man from Satan’s influence. In God’s majestic, wrathful judgment and chastisement we see God face-to-face. Like a double-edged sword, God’s word pierces our hearts, it reveals our satanic nature of resisting and betraying God as well as even our corrupt dispositions in the deepest recesses of our hearts which we ourselves have no way of discovering. It makes us see that the essence of our nature is filled with such satanic dispositions as arrogance, conceit, selfishness, baseness, evasiveness, and craftiness, that we are simply without a shred of human likeness, and are completely the embodiment of Satan. It is only then that we prostrate ourselves before God, beginning to hate and curse ourselves. At the same time, we also sense profoundly that all of God’s word is the truth, it is all the revelation of God’s disposition as well as what the life of God is. We see that God’s righteous disposition does not tolerate offense, and that God’s holy essence will not be sullied. The result is developing a heart of reverence for God; we begin to pursue the truth with all our might and to behave according to the word of God. As we gradually come to understand the truth, we will have more and more of an understanding of our own satanic nature and disposition, and gain more and more discernment. Our knowledge of God will also increase. Our internal corrupt dispositions will slowly be cleansed and we will be freed from the bonds of sin. We will gain true release and live freely before God. This is precisely the outcome achieved in mankind through God’s work of judgment in the last days. It can therefore be seen that the work of ‘redemption’ in the Age of Grace and the work of ‘ridding man of sin’ in the last days are two different stages of work. ‘Redemption’ was just the Lord Jesus taking on man’s sins in their stead and allowing man to escape the punishment they should have suffered for their sins. But that didn’t mean that people were without sin, much less that they would never again sin or that they were totally purified. Whereas ‘ridding man of sin’ is completely exposing mankind’s sinful nature so that we can live without relying on our corrupt nature anymore, so we can achieve a change in our life disposition and become totally purified. Therefore, only by accepting God’s work of judgment in the last days can our corrupt dispositions be thoroughly resolved, can we rid ourselves of Satan’s influence and be saved, be led into the kingdom of God and attain God’s promises and blessings.”
Hearing the word of God and the sisters’ fellowship, I felt that it was completely in line with reality and was very practical. I thought back on my many years as a man of faith: I not only often lied and cheated, but I was also arrogant and unrestrained, rude and unreasonable, and willful. People who worked for me were afraid of me and kept their distance from me, and even in my own home my wife and daughter were a little scared of me as well. No one wanted to open up to me and I couldn’t even find a close friend to confide in. It was painful and I felt helpless. Even though I often read the Bible and prayed, confessed my sins to the Lord, and even despised myself, I would keep doing the same terrible things. I could not change myself at all. Someone like me who’s constantly sinning and resisting the Lord is in great need of God’s work of judgment in the last days! The Lord Jesus has now returned—He is Almighty God incarnate. Today, having the chance to hear the voice of God and to learn that the Lord Jesus has come again to deliver the truth and undertake the work of judging, cleansing, and saving man, I really am extremely fortunate! That sister saw that I was filled with longing, so she gave me a copy of a book of God’s word: God’s Sheep Hear the Voice of God. I accepted it happily and resolved to really practice my faith in Almighty God!
I read many of God’s words after accepting Almighty God’s work in the last days. I read about the three stages of God’s work, the mystery of the incarnation, the meaning of God’s name and the inside story of the Holy Bible, as well as how the overcomers are made, how the kingdom of Christ is realized, how the final outcome and destination of each type of person will be determined, and other aspects of the truth, gradually gaining some understanding of them. I also gained more faith in God.
At first, when I read God’s words that judge and expose man so harshly, I felt distressed and uncomfortable and had some notions about them; I felt that God’s words were too severe. Could He not be a little gentler? If God judges man in this way, is man not then condemned? How can he then be truly saved? Later, I read in the word of God: “In the last days, Christ uses a variety of truths to teach man, to expose the essence of man, and to dissect the words and deeds of man. These words comprise various truths, such as man’s duty, how man should obey God, how man should be loyal to God, how man ought to live out normal humanity, as well as the wisdom and the disposition of God, and so on. These words are all directed at the essence of man and his corrupt disposition. In particular, the words that expose how man spurns God are spoken in regard to how man is an embodiment of Satan, and an enemy force against God. In undertaking His work of judgment, God does not simply make clear the nature of man with a few words; He exposes, deals with, and prunes over the long term. These methods of exposure, dealing, and pruning cannot be substituted with ordinary words, but with the truth of which man is utterly bereft. Only methods such as these can be called judgment; only through judgment of this kind can man be subdued and thoroughly convinced into submission to God, and moreover gain true knowledge of God” (“Christ Does the Work of Judgment With the Truth” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). “Through what is God’s perfection of man accomplished? Through His righteous disposition. God’s disposition primarily consists of righteousness, wrath, majesty, judgment, and curse, and His perfection of man is primarily through judgment. Some people don’t understand, and ask why it is that God is only able to make man perfect through judgment and curse. They say, ‘If God were to curse man, wouldn’t man die? If God were to judge man, wouldn’t man be condemned? Then how can he still be made perfect?’ Such are the words of people who do not know the work of God. What God curses is the disobedience of man, and what He judges are the sins of man. Although He speaks harshly, and without the slightest sensitivity, He reveals all that is within man, and through these stern words He reveals that which is essential within man, yet through such judgment, He gives man a profound knowledge of the essence of the flesh, and thus man submits to obedience before God. The flesh of man is of sin, and of Satan, it is disobedient, and the object of God’s chastisement—and so, to allow man to know himself, the words of God’s judgment must befall him and there must be employed every kind of refinement; only then can God’s work be effective” (“Only by Experiencing Painful Trials Can You Know the Loveliness of God” in The Word Appears in the Flesh). From God’s words I realized that God performs His work of judgment in the last days through expressing the truth, and that He severely judges, exposes and condemns man’s corrupt dispositions, satanic nature, and wicked deeds that oppose God. He does this so that we see clearly the truth of our own corruption, understand thoroughly the essence of our corrupt dispositions, and know our own satanic nature and the source of our corruption. This is the only way we can despise ourselves and forsake the flesh. In addition, it is only because God shows His righteous, majestic and wrathful disposition through His judgment and chastisement that we are able to see His righteousness and holiness, as well as see clearly our own filthiness, ugliness and wickedness. God also does this so that we may know our own satanic nature and the truth of our corruption. If God did not judge man so severely, if God did not expose man’s corruption by striking right at the heart of the matter, and if He did not reveal His righteous and majestic disposition, then we humans, who have been corrupted so deeply by Satan, would be unable to reflect on ourselves or know ourselves. We would be incapable of knowing the truth of our own corruption or our satanic nature. If that were the case, then how would we rid ourselves of our sinful nature and be purified? From the results achieved by God’s stern words we can see that hidden within them are God’s true love for man and the painstaking efforts He goes to to save man. The more I read God’s words, the more I feel how wonderful God’s work of judgment is. God’s work is so practical! Only God’s severe judgment can purify, transform, and save man. God’s work of judgment in the last days is truly what we need!
Due to my arrogant and extremely self-righteous nature, when speaking to others I often lectured them in a condescending way, and in my actions I was a law unto myself. I always loved getting others to listen to me and was prone to showing off. Several times at gatherings, I gave fellowship about how I had handled problems in my work unit, how I had rebuked staff who hadn’t followed instructions and subdued them, as well as how my wife and daughter did what I told them to. Particularly when I shared fellowship on God’s words, I would say things like, “I believe this passage of God’s words means this,” and “this is what I think.” A brother saw that I was always revealing an arrogant and self-righteous disposition without being aware of it myself. He pointed this out to me at a gathering, saying that speaking and acting in this way was an expression of arrogance, self-righteousness, and unreasonableness. If anyone had exposed me that way in the past, and in front of so many people to boot, I would certainly have argued my own case and refuted them right away. But at the time, I chose to be silent without arguing or justifying myself, because these words from a sermon came to mind: “If you always say ‘I think’ with every subject you encounter, well, you had best let go of your opinions. I urge you to let go of your opinions and seek the truth. See what the words of God say. Your ‘opinion’ is not the truth! … You are too arrogant and self-righteous! When faced with the truth, you cannot even let go of or deny your own notions and imaginings. You do not want to obey God in the slightest! Of those who truly pursue the truth and truly have a heart that reveres God, who still says ‘I think’? This saying has already been eliminated, for by saying it one reveals one’s satanic disposition” (Sermons and Fellowship on Entry Into Life). This fellowship reminded me that, whenever I encountered an issue, words such as “I think,” “I maintain,” and “I believe” were generally on my lips, always starting with the word “I,” and myself always had the final say on everything. I believed that I could see through things myself, and could deal with problems. I always made others do as I said and obey me. By always regarding myself so highly, was that not precisely revealing an arrogant disposition? What that brother said to me when he pointed out my disposition was all true, and I should accept it. The things I believed emanated from my notions and imaginings, they came from Satan, and they were certainly not the truth. I thought about how, whether at home, at work, or amongst colleagues, I was always behaving as if I were number one. If anyone didn’t listen to me or did something out of line with my views, I would get angry and tell them off. The fact that I was capable of revealing these things meant that there was no place for God in my heart, that I did not honor God as great, but rather honored myself as great. That was generally how I spoke and behaved, proving what an incredibly arrogant disposition I have!
I later read those words of God: “If you really possess the truth within you, the path you walk will naturally be the correct path. Without the truth, it is easy to do evil, and you will do it despite yourself. For example, if you had arrogance and conceit, you would find it impossible to keep from defying God; you would feel compelled to defy Him. You would not do it on purpose; you would do it under the domination of your arrogant and conceited nature. Your arrogance and conceit would make you look down on God and see Him as being of no account; they would cause you to exalt yourself, constantly put yourself on display, and, finally, sit in God’s place and bear testimony for yourself. In the end, you would turn your own ideas, your own thinking, and your own notions into truths to be worshiped. See how much evil is done by people under the dominance of their arrogant and conceited nature! To resolve their evil acts, they must first resolve the problem of their nature. Without a change in disposition, it would not be possible to bring a fundamental resolution to this problem” (“Only by Pursuing the Truth Can You Obtain Changes in Your Disposition” in Records of Christ’s Talks). Every word spoken by God is the truth—I was utterly convinced. I thought of how I used to lecture others condescendingly at construction sites, around my colleagues, and when I was at home. All of this was me being dominated by my satanic, arrogant nature; it was not brought about because I’m an angry person, or because I have a bad temper or lack self-restraint. I believed myself to have caliber and talent and good earning power, which fed my arrogance and became the currency of my life, so I thought of myself as better than others. I looked down on everyone else, I thought I was better than everyone else and always lorded over other people. I had found the source of my sin and had seen the perilous consequences of leaving my satanic and corrupt disposition unresolved. And so I made an effort to look up and read many of God’s words judging and exposing man’s arrogant nature, and reflected on myself in comparison. Through God’s words of judgment and revealing as well as the fellowship of brothers and sisters in gatherings, I began to gain a shallow understanding of my own arrogant nature. I saw that I was not in fact better than anyone else, and that my ability and wealth had all been bestowed by God, so I had nothing to boast about. If God hadn’t bestowed wisdom and intelligence on me, if God hadn’t blessed me, what could I have done just relying on myself? There are so many talented people in the world; why do they toil and rush about all their lives just to end up empty-handed? I also found the path to resolve my arrogant nature within God’s words, which was to accept more of being pruned and dealt with by brothers and sisters, to accept more of the judgment, chastisement, trials and refinement of God, reflect on myself in light of God’s words, achieve true self-knowledge and self-hatred, and to no longer act according to my satanic disposition but to act in accordance with God’s words. I later experienced many instances of being judged and chastised, pruned and dealt with, and I experienced many setbacks and failures. My knowledge of my satanic nature and corrupt essence was gradually deepened, and I also gained a shallow understanding of God’s greatness, righteousness and holiness. The more I came to know God’s righteousness and holiness, the more I saw my own filthiness, lowliness, insignificance and pitifulness. The things which I thought important before or had boasted about, I then felt weren’t even worth mentioning. Before I knew it, my arrogant disposition began to change. Whoever said something that was correct—brothers and sisters, my colleagues, or my family—I would accept it. I no longer spoke to others condescendingly, but acted with humility and I was no longer a law unto myself. Whenever an issue arose I would discuss it with others, and I would act according to whoever’s suggestion was correct. Slowly, my relationships with those around me began to normalize. I had peace and joy in my heart, and I felt that I was finally living out a bit of a human likeness.
By constantly reading God’s word and living the life of the church, I felt more and more how truly great it was that I was able to accept God’s work of judgment in the last days. I genuinely experienced that I would have no way to resolve my corrupt disposition myself. Only through the judgment and chastisement of God’s words have I been gradually changed and cleansed. In The Church of Almighty God, I see many brothers and sisters working hard at pursuing the truth, and accepting the judgment and chastisement of Almighty God’s words. Whenever someone reveals corruption, others point it out and everyone helps each other. We all reflect on ourselves and know ourselves in the light of God’s words, and we seek the truth to resolve our corruption. Everyone practices being honest people and being pure and open; we accept and submit to whatever fellowship is in conformity with the truth and our corrupt dispositions change more and more. The words of Almighty God can indeed purify and change people. God incarnate has come amongst us, He personally expresses His words to judge and purify us, and He leads us to cast off sin and be fully saved—we are so fortunate! Thinking of all those true believers who are waiting impatiently for His return, who yearn to cast off the bonds of sin and be cleansed, yet who live in pain without a path to follow, I said a prayer to God and made a resolution: “I wish to preach Your kingdom gospel to other people so that they can be like me, following Your footsteps and embarking upon the path to purification and complete salvation!”

2020.09.19 04:03 Colourblindness The Last Will and Testament of Charles T. Bowman

I never met Charlie Bowman. Not that I expected to, in a company the size of this one; the chances of ever rubbing shoulders with the CEO are probably astronomical.
Still, he was the one who always signed my checks every payday so when the news spread that he had a heart attack, you can bet I was worried.
Stocks plummeted, clients bailed and employees were the ones left holding the bag. It felt like we were reliving the market crash of 08 in slow motion. Those of us that did make it through those few tumultuous weeks were only doing so because of some vain hope that Bowman’s living will would sell the company shares evenly and we could be done with this whole mess.
Instead on Monday morning we were greeted with the most peculiar of emails, and since it is here that this tale begins I have taken the liberty of copying it directly from the original transcript; save for the names of those involved.
From: ██████████ To: ██████ Subject: Last Will and Testament of CEO, Mister Bowman
To whom it may concern,
If you are receiving this message please keep it to yourself and do not share with any of your coworkers. As many of you are well aware, Mister Bowman was a private person and we are hoping to honor his legacy this Thursday night with a small event. It is invitation only, and will be held in conference room 14 on the 5th floor at exactly 19:13. Do not arrive a minute late for the doors will be closed and admittance will he refused. The event is expected to last no longer than an hour and we request that you follow company policy 014 and deposit all cell phones at the security front desk before taking the elevators to the aforementioned conference room.
Should you not be able to attend and you would like to provide your invite to another coworker, please simply forward this back to the Human Resources department and we will handle everything. It is imperative that you respond quickly however as there are only twelve available slots. Mister Bowman has left very specific instructions regarding the future of this company and they must be followed to the letter. We trust you understand the seriousness of this matter and look forward to hearing from you,
Sincerely, the Board of Directors
I was immediately left speechless and found myself glancing about the cubicles nearby to see if anyone else in my part of the floor was sharing my stunned expression. No one did. Out of the sixty something people in my department, I was starting to feel like the recipient of a golden ticket from Willy Wonka himself.
I did as told and spoke to no one about the email, not even the pretty blonde from accounting who would usually flirt with me in our shared break room. I figured that whoever had sent it likely had eyes and ears throughout the company and I didn’t want to mess up anything by a mere slip of the tongue.
Instead, in the meantime, I decided to start looking into the life of our CEO, although I am not quite sure why. I guess I figured that if I could figure out how a man of his caliber thought and acted in order to make decisions, maybe it would help me predict what his plans were for the company he built and was betrayed by.
I started with Google, as silly as it sounds. Despite having been here for three years I knew that most of the staff really knew next to nothing about the upper crust. Google immediately told me why on Bowman’s Wikipedia page.
“Shy philanthropist or secluded psychopath? For the owner and founder of the legal firm Hatchett&Bur, Charles Theodore Bowman is both and so much more,” it said.
Born in August 1976 to two immigrants from San Pedro, Bowman was raised under the name Enrique Besiluez and did not obtain American Citizenship until 1994 due to processing issues and the divorce of his parents, Samael and Merida. A child of two worlds, he constantly found himself handling the affairs of his sickly mother along with the messy history of his criminal father. He had three siblings, or at least that was all that the internet could find; but none of them ever moved state side. Interestingly he made his first million illegally and did time in Cuba from 84 to 93, running scams and drug money up to the Florida Coast.
Then, according to the articles; he had his “come to Jesus” moment around 94. Like, literally. Some missionaries from Puerto Rico were allowed to come into the detainment block and preach the gospel to prisoners. The plan was that those who were receptive and agreed to work visas would come to America in hopes of a better life. “A clean slate,” is what one interviewer proclaimed it was meant to be.
For Enrique, that was precisely it. He took up classes and college courses using the program and quickly made his first business venture helping a Florida entrepreneurial company capitalize on recent Cuban trading and travel. By the end of that decade, he was considered a successful candidate for Fortune 500.
The next years after the Y2K were harder for me to track down. It seemed as though after coming to the states and having a nasty relationship of his own, that Mister Bowman became something of a recluse. Now that I had seen the results of his life and all the pain he had gone through, it wasn’t a stretch of the imagination to see this happening. Once grabbing a doctorate in law and signing contracts for this company, Bowman has only been seen twice during live interviews. I watched one of them on YouTube.
He seemed a solemn and contrite man, filled with remorse and regret over wasted youth.
“Here I am, hardly meeting my prime and the years will be gone before I know it. All this time I have squandered,” he admitted.
It was actually somewhat difficult for me to watch and made me think of my own father. He was well past Bowman’s age, yet recently was undergoing medical issues of his own. Arthritis, back pain, tonsillitis. Just to name a few.
I couldn’t imagine what it would be like for his family. Yet so far I haven't seen anyone. Was this because of how he had spent his life? Focusing on the future of an investment, we became his family in every sense. And we treated him like a stepfather, only going to him for favors.
I was just about to finish my web search when another headline caught my eye. This one was a prison obituary.
Enrique Besiluez, age 18- blood poisoning.
I clicked on it and soon found myself on a secured site for conspiracy theorists. A few bizarre gory images came up of disembodied corpses and I shut it down. Hopefully I didn’t tip off any of our company servers by checking the link.
That night however, the brief snippet of information I had seen on the darkweb bothered me. Dead in prison back in 1994? How could such a thing be? I decided to take a closer look.
At home using my TOR router, I logged in and found dozens of articles related to occultism, regeneration, the fountain of youth. I still didn’t understand though what any of these had to do with Mister Bowman. Then I saw a link to what I guessed was meant to be a religious site. “The Order of the Phoenix invites you to rebirth yourself. Become a member today.”
The idea of a cult advertising online was a bit silly to me, but since I had already gone down this rabbit hole pretty far I figured it wouldn’t hurt to dig a bit deeper.
Clicking on it led me to my own company's server. It was a job application.
In fact I was almost positive it was the same application I had filled out when I applied three years ago. Was this implying our company was being run by Satanists? It seemed far fetched.
I decided to stop my search altogether. It was a bit too strange for me to read up on powerful demons and forces beyond my understanding. If this was the sort of thing Mister Bowman did with his free time, it was no wonder he was a quiet man.
It also worried me about the upcoming meeting. Everything was shrouded in secrecy. What if it was some sort of cult practice? A going away ritual for Bowman? I didn’t believe in such nonsense and I didn’t want to risk actually incurring the wrath of any real demons.
Still…. I convinced myself I had to attend. It felt important to learn the truth.
Thursday arrived before I had definitively made up my mind and another email made the decision for me.
From: ██████████ To: ██████ RE: Subject: Last Will and Testament of CEO, Mister Bowman
All employees invited to the special reading of Mister Bowman’s will shall clock out today at exactly 3:30 and return no less than fifteen minutes early of the aforementioned time. All other employees will be sent home with a full days wage.
That final sentence intrigued me more than anything else. This was a law firm. We never took days off. We never could afford to.
But like clockwork that was exactly what happened. 3:30 rolled around and everyone was heading for the time clock. A few of my coworkers were grumbling about the unexpected short day, wondering if it meant that the company was about to tank.
But amongst the crowd I picked out one or two that were like me, stoic and silent. Most likely other recipients of the mysterious invitation to Bowman’s will.
Once at the parking garage I sat in my car for a minute or two, wondering where I would go with my free time. As sad as it is to say, I have devoted a lot of my past three years to this company so that I could make a name for myself in the future.
Social life and relaxation always came secondary.
Instead I found myself just sitting there, watching as all the other cars left until at last I was alone. Behind me I saw even the security guards were leaving and locking up the doors and I wondered how in the world were we supposed to get in later?
An hour passed. Then two. I just kept watching the doors to see if anyone else would show.
Finally the crucial fifteen minute mark came and I saw someone inside push the door open.
Immediately I popped out and moved toward the entrance, stepping inside the dimly lit hall to see one of the HR managers checking his watch.
A few others came in shortly afterward and the HR dude told us all to stand over by the east wall. Then just like any normal work day we were reminded to drop our cell phones and pagers into a security deposit box.
The flirty accountant was there too and she gave me a knowing smile as she dropped her tech in.
“We really must stop meeting like this,” she teased.
I gave her a half hearted grin and followed the crowd to the elevator. The HR guy pressed for the fifth floor and the dozen of us chosen were packed in like sardines. I found myself elbow to elbow with the accountant and muttered, “What do you think this is all about?”
“My guess? The company is going under and the shares are being divided amongst us,” she whispered back.
“I heard we were sold to some Vietnam hedge fund,” a man in front of us commented. The elevator shook for a second and the doors opened to the fifth floor. There wasn’t a light on anywhere except for a door about twenty yards away. Conference room 14.
We marched to it like good obedient soldiers. The HR guy opened it and ushered us all inside.
If the hall was dark, then this room was like walking into a black hole. I couldn’t even see the hand in front of my face. We were told to find a seat. My hands fumbled and found the table, and I slowly followed its outline until reaching one of the rolling chairs and sitting down. Then in the front of the room, the manager lit a candle and began to give some instructions.
“Each of you will find a candle in front of your own position around the table. Please take a moment and bring it to your face.
My eyes were starting to adjust to the pitch black and I saw immediately what he was referring to. But where were the matches? What was supposed to happen now?
The manager answered my silent inquiry. “Tonight we are celebrating Mister Bowman’s legacy with a ritual passed down through the ages. We will be attempting to call upon his restless spirit and communicate his wishes to you from the afterlife.” A few in the darkness muttered surprise. I think I swallowed a gulp of air. I had worried something like this might happen yet despite my sensibilities, I still came.
“If any of you are not comfortable participating you have the chance to leave,” the manager added. “But be aware that it is quite likely whatever reward Mister Bowman has in store for you will likely be forfeit.”
None of us moved a muscle. Maybe it was fear that kept us there? Maybe it was greed. Either way, the manager explained what would happen next.
“I will attempt to channel the spirit of Mister Bowman here now using the traditional means of his culture,” he said, letting the light flicker toward a strange looking board in front of him. It resembled something akin to ouija, but instead I recognized that it was far far older.
“Spirit of Charles Theodore Bowman… we loyal call to you. We chant to your name and demand your presence here at this gathering of willing souls. Help us spirit to guide you toward happiness and longevity.”
All of us looked at each other in the dim light, wondering what we were to expect.
Suddenly the board in front of the man began to write out a message. And amid the shades of the candle, I swore I saw dark apparitions moving and guiding the letters.
My life and my death, both are meaningless. the message said.
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“Death is as much a part of life as breathing is,” the manager said in a peculiar voice. He sounded possessed.
Instinctively I asked, “Charles… is that you?”
“He is here with us. I am an entity far older and far more powerful than he,” the man answered. The shadows continued to linger and dance behind him. The room suddenly felt very cold and very claustrophobic.
“This is a load of bupkis,” one man said rising to leave. But some unseen force slammed him back down to his chair.
“You came seeking fortune that didn’t belong to you. And yet you call us the frauds,” the man snapped back. Suddenly my coworker began to shake and I saw the manager’s eyes glow. If I wasn’t already convinced this was real, seeing this man suffer in pain from demonic forces clinched it. I was sweating and wanted to vomit.
Why had I ever thought this was a good idea? “Stop! Please!” I said bravely.
The seizures halted and the HR guy looked toward me.
“What is it that you want from us?” I meekly asked.
His eyes returned to their normal color and he smiled softly.
“There is no need for fear. All of you were chosen for a reason. Your fortitude and devotion to the company are unmatched. And one of you will obtain the gift that I received years ago.”
I held my breath. My mind raced back to the articles that I had read about Enrique. The strange feeling I got when I discovered that the young man had died in prison. What if that hadn’t been a mistake?
“You are on the verge of discovering the truth about the human spirit,” the manager intoned but I could tell he was no longer in charge of his body. Something old and evil was now speaking to us.
“Charles Bowman is but the latest in a string of others who have followed my call. And you will as well.”
I felt the accountant touch my hand and squeeze as we sat there waiting for the inevitable. I felt like a fool. Then a strange bolt of white light burst from her chest.
I felt her body begin to seize and saw her eyes rolled back into her head. The others next to me suffered a worse fate. Blood streaked down from their pupils and their collapsed onto the table. In a matter of seconds their skin started to melt. She let go of my hand and started babbling nonsense. Her whole body was writhing as the rest of the staff became puddles of goo save for the manager.
Then the candles ignited and I saw some ethereal force leaving all of their bodies.
The HR guy opened his mouth abnormally wide and sucked in the air. The spirits came to him the way a waft of smoke would, and he swallowed them all in one gulp. Then whatever evil force was still within him burst out of his body and ripped through the roof.
What was left of the manager was just another disemboweled body the same kind I had seen in those dark pages of the web. This was prophecy fulfilled I realized. I turned to see the accountant’s body stop moving and she opened her eyes again, her soft green eyes now a shade of magenta.
“Don’t be afraid,” she cooed.
Instantly I fell out of my chair. This wasn’t the woman I had spent years with flirting. This was something inhuman.
“Why am I still alive?” I asked weakly.
She smiled but didn’t respond at first. She took my hand and we left the conference room.
“I… I won’t say a word of this to anyone. I swear. I’ll keep my mouth shut,” I told her.
Neither of us said a word as we left the building and I’ve contemplated what to do since. I could leave. Lose my comfy office and my 401k. I could blow the whistle. Warn the world of this evil. I doubt anyone would believe me. And what benefit would there be? These thoughts ran through my head all weekend long. Most of all I considered the life of Mister Bowman.
How he rose from poverty and made a deal with a literal devil to survive and gain wealth. It was frightening to consider how many people did that on a regular basis even without supernatural aid.
By the time Monday rolled around I knew that I would be going back. I kept my head down and went straight for my office, knowing that soon the other shoe would drop.
When it did, I was invited to the presidential suite. It was crafted as a letter of promotion for my good service toward the company.
But I knew the truth. It was time for me to start making deals with this devil myself.

2020.09.19 04:02 30m4r Prophecies of Prophet Muhammad

Since this sub is about prophecies I was surprised not to see any posts about the prophecies of Prophet Muhammad who talked about these prophecies I’m about to mention, 1400 years ago.

2020.09.18 20:56 relykslady Debating on whether or not to message my cousins that I haven't seen or heard from or about in over 10 years.

Might be a long read, I apologize. TL;DR at bottom.
Backstory, my dad is the oldest of 4 siblings. In order of age, it's him, my uncle, any aunt, and my other uncle, who is the youngest.
When I was younger, maybe 7, or 8, I had 2 baby cousins from my youngest uncle. Every so often, my mom, would take my little brother, myself, and my youngest uncle, to go and pick them up from their mom so we could all hang out and visit. We went to the park one day, went to our house to play another day, took them with us to get lunch and ice cream another time. Just little small stuff.
Well, after maybe just 4 months or so (I'm not too sure), we just stopped seeing them all of a sudden. I was young and didn't understand at the time. But as years progressed, I got older, my mom told me why we stopped seeing them.
My youngest uncle and his lady split up, she started seeing someone else. My uncle started following the wrong crowd, and ended up in a gang. I did't know the real, or exact reason why at the time, but his lady decided that my uncle doesn't have any rights to his children anymore. Idk if she went to court, or if he just doesn't care. Idk and will probably never know, maybe she had her own reasons like keeping them safe, or maybe she was a total b#*[email protected] and cheated and drove him away, idk, what's done is done though.
So, as I'm growing up, maybe about 12 or 13 now, after years of not seeing or hearing about or from my uncle, he shows up to a family reunion. I'm shocked. I haven't seen him in years. He's married, and has a step daughter around my age. Cool.
After the reunion, I inform my mom about this. So she tells me what she knows, and then later I go to my dad and ask the same thing. ( At this point in my life, my parents are split up as well. )
So, from what I've gathered from the 2 of them, here's a bit of his 'history'. He's been in and out of jail. On and off using drug. Found and lost Jesus. He stole from his brother. Lied to his sister. Was involved with a robbery of a liquor store. Was involved with the crime of grand theif auto. So, a lot of my dads side, although they still probably love him, have decided to stop contacting him.
Now, I am 28 years old, have kids of my own, and he's currently in prison, and going to be there for quite a while. You can even google his name, and the first few links will be of articles about him doing a series of robberies and then finally was caught in my current city of residence.
Anyways, small talk occurred between my brother and I one day, and our 2 cousins came into the conversation. We haven't seen them, or heard about them from anyone since we were younger, and we were just like, 'I hope they're okay' then continued on with our conversation.
A few days later, I decided to look them up on a few social media sites. I found both of their names on Facebook. Now, I'm so scared and nervous to send a friend request and/or message. What would I even say? What if they don't believe me? What if they have no intrest in reconnecting? What if they aren't even my cousins?
I'm so torn, because I've lived most of my life without them, but as far as I know, they are family. How would their mom feel about me contacting them ? I don't even know how old they are, I just know that I'm older by at least 5 years. I've known about their Facebook for about a month now and this is driving me crazy.
What would you do in this situation?
TL;DR I haven't seen or heard about my cousins in over 10 years. I decided to look them up on Facebook, found them, but don't know if I should contact them due to their father's history and my family's absence in their lives.

2020.09.18 20:06 BibleDiscourses The Mountain Meadows Massacre : Contemporary Images

The Mountain Meadows Massacre : Contemporary Images
These images relate to the Mountain Meadows Massacre (September 7–11, 1857), an event that saw Mormon frontier soldiers attack and kill 140 innocent Arkansans, who were part of the Baker–Fancher emigrant wagon, as they crossed the Utah Territory. The massacre was retaliatory, as Mormon "Apostle," Parley P. Pratt, had been killed by one of his wives estranged ex-husbands, in Arkansas, that same year, albeit in a completely unrelated incident, and did not involve these particular Arkansans. This massacre is an early example of murderous Mormon thuggery, of which, is often a response to "violations" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' theocratic dogmas. These scenes are of Mormon visits to the site of the massacre, a monument to the victims in Arkansas, John D. Lee's tomb, the gravestone of William C. Stewart, one of the Mountain Meadows Massacre assassins, and at the very bottom, a news article on the execution of John Doyle Lee, one of the Mormon perpetrators/murderers.

2020.09.18 18:38 just_noticing Miscellaneous...

Just as K, Tolle talks from and about normal human consciousness. Here are some quotes by Tolle.
These quotes(thoughts) are given, ....”to make you embrace the present.” BUT as we and K have already argued —thought is not the way to this reality!!!
This has always been a problem for these so called ‘spiritual teachers’. * ie. helping their followers to get to where they are.
In our opinion, Natural Meditation(which is ‘noticing by the body’) is a way/a vehicle to K’s and Tolle’s state of consciousness. ie. when the meditation of the body is ‘seen’ —this ‘seeing’ is the ‘observation’ K is talking about. It is attention, pure consciousness or what many sages refer to as, the consciousness of ‘the Self’(VS) as apposed to ‘the self’ which is a thought-structure who’s activity is noticeable.
All other meditations must lead to ‘observation’ or they have no validity.
 * K and Jesus are not exempt.
(2) TIME:
There are two kinds of ‘time’. There is chronological time(the time between two heart beats) which is real-time AND there is psychological time which is our perception of time.
It takes real-time to deprogram the brain BUT no time at all to get this process started AND it all begins when you notice for the first time. Noticing is the switch that turns on ‘the intelligence of the body’(the NI) and turns off ‘the programming of the self’
turns on the ‘seeing’ of ‘observation’ for the first time.
There are two possible states of consciousness...
 ‘duality’ and ‘no duality’
Most of us live in ‘duality’. To see truth you must live in ‘no duality’ and this truth was referred to by K as ‘what is’.
take the ‘red pill’. —The matrix has you—
K for me was an inspiration BUT all his hinting about the state he was in and the state everyone else was in just made me realize that I had to strike out on my own.
—so I took the red pill—
I didn’t know where I was going to end up but in the end it all went where K was, SO ‘no duality’ consciousness is real and is I believe normal consciousness and everyone’s birthright.
I really wasn’t sure about it all until I introduced my wife to the whole thing and after a time she ‘got it’ and the end result was the same as mine. Since then our son has discovered it.
To be where the “I” is quiet is really quite an experience and I heartily recommend it to everyone and this is why we have come to this site —to help others to get to where K was.
Meditation is just life/normal human consciousness/seeing(what is).
In that seeing, the wisdom of the body and reasonable thinking is possible SO meditation does have a purpose.
The paradoxical nature of meditation.
K has spoken of it. ie. the state of meditation is so important but there is nothing the individual can do to achieve it. Technique only strengthens ‘the self’.
Don’t do anything!!! You can’t do anything. There is nothing to do. Jeez! 🙄
For those of you who meditate...
Next time you feel 'the inclination/the need to meditated' —was the noticing of this ‘seen’? OR more simply —was this ‘seen’? That’s it!!! 🤗
As soon as something is ‘noticed’ the truth is seen. As time passes ‘noticing’ graduates to just ‘seeing’ which is the intelligence of ‘insight’ and truth just flows. This is where K was. He referred to it as ‘no duality’ consciousness.
BUT and this is a big ‘but’ —I’m not sure if he was ever successful at helping anyone arrive at where he was because he had no experience with getting there himself.* He just found himself there. The greatest frustration of his life, I’m sure.
. * NOTE: this may not be true. I like most of us on Reddit-K tend to see our hero as that perfect human being from the very beginning🙄...
When you start to ‘notice’ is when you will come face to face with all the dynamics of your consciousness(the what is’s) and this will begin a resolution of the complexities of your life —AND your life will become a meditation.
ie. Give thanks to all those assaults on your pride for each one presents an opportunity to notice and cross over into K’s land of ‘no duality’ —a life of meditation.
(8) K and BUDDHISM:
QUESTION: I might be biased because I come from a Buddhist framework, but you used the term 'objectification of consciousness' -- isn't consciousness not an object in the first place / not meant to be perceived as an object? Since you're trying to break the illusion of solidifying things, revealing their fundamentally not-self nature?
By objectification of consciousness, do you mean 'nondual awareness' as it is commonly known in Advaita, or 'awareness without thought' or just that ineffable 'not-thing' that is usually described by people who meditate?
Not a criticism, just trying to understand a few things.
ANSWER: I’ll try to answer BUT I don’t come from a Buddhist background so please correct me if I start to get off on the wrong track.
Just theory from my own experience—
A purely biological-psychological approach. Personally I have never encountered anything of a spiritual nature in my meditation.
SO without further ado...
Firstly there is just consciousness. That’s it!!!
Consciousness(VS) allows the NI to see the activities of consciousness —from thought* to that of a single cell.
Consciousness may also be part of a neuro-bio-feedback mechanism created by my body for the sole purpose of allowing my body to see so that it can successfully exist.
SO the very nature of consciousness is ‘objectification’(seeing) and this is ouK’s meditation 24/7.
When the body notices something in consciousness and this is ‘seen’ THEN noticing has become a vehicle to the objectification of consciousness which is K’s form of meditation ie. ‘observation’.
Consciousness is not an object BUT RATHER pure consciousness objectifies its content.**
At the level where thoughts can exist —things in consciousness are simply seen. This i think is what you refer to as ‘nondual awareness‘ or ‘awareness without thought’ AND I believe this is K’s ‘no duality’ consciousness.
 * thoughts, and feelings as well as sensations that create a perception of my body in the world. ** impure consciousness, which is the ‘duality’ consciousness is where most of the world is, right now.
REPLY: Thank you for the detailed explanation
“Consciousness is not an object BUT RATHER pure consciousness objectifies its content.**”
Yup this is pretty much in line with the eastern 'spiritual' explanation. Objects 'appear' in consciousness
Natural meditation is simply the body observing itself and this whole thing begins with something ‘noticed’. Through observation the body maintains itself 24/7 —from thought all the way to a single cell.
 ie. notice-observe-analyze-correct(if necessary, if possible)
When the body’s noticing is ‘seen’ this is K’s meditation which is ‘observation’.
The body loves itself and wants to be healthy.
The problem is with a thought-structure called ‘the self’, which is a creation of the mind.
The self loves itself and wants to be healthy.
The only way it can maintain itself is through the polarity / the dynamic of ‘me and not me’. K called this kind of consciousness ’duality’ which is conflict-consciousness.
The body chemistry of duality interferes with observation and prevents the body from maintaining itself.
In the end it all comes down to this... you want to maintain ‘the self’ or ‘the body’?
REMEMBER in the constant meditation of the body there is no polarity / no duality —just observation of ‘what is’ AND it all begins with that first noticing.
(10) OUR ‘NI’
Your post is sooo fascinating... especially this,
“Since our body is actually a wide range of systems performing an inconceivably vast number of biochemical activities, there is really a miraculous sort of intelligence that is obviously directing it all.”
For years I have thought that our DNA 🧬not only creates us but maintains us thru what I call a natural/normal intelligence(NI)* which is a gestalt made up of all physiological/biological functions of the body(including the microbiome) working together.
 * this is our real intelligence. The intellect is simply a creation of the NI
The NI uses consciousness to see/observe the operation of the body all the way from ‘thought’ to the functioning of a ‘single cell’.
The problem occurs when a thought-structure called ‘the self’ tries to maintain itself thru conflict(duality).** This chemically stresses the body and prevents the NI from observing the operation of the body and doing the job it was created to do.
 ie. notice-observe-analyze-correct(if necessary, if possible)
** this is the basis of the two Krishnamurti’s (K and UG) argument.
There is nothing ‘you’ can do.
When anxiety is noticed it is observed.
Noticing is a sensitivity of the body and has nothing to do with ‘the self’.
This is the natural meditation of the body.
There is no technique to this.
There is nothing to do.
You just happen on it
You’ll know when it happens.
When this is ‘seen’
It will be your epiphany!!!
Good luck. 😌
When a thought or feeling is ‘noticed’ —noticing becomes a vehicle to K’s form of observation .
QUESTION: Can you meditate for control? I was hoping my journey took me to a place where I can “tame” my subconscious.
ANSWER: Noticing will penetrate the unconscious(the subconscious)... Over time all of the subconscious is noticed and granted freedom through observation. In this freedom is the ending and so the taming of the subconscious. Meditation is not about control —it is about out of control / flow / freedom to be ‘what is’ AND this is no duality / no conflict consciousness BUT at the beginning and over time —lots of activity because this is the brain deprograming itself after years / decades of conditioning AND all of this is simply observed to nothingness.
Quoting K, “....when once you see the fact, there is only ‘what is’, and observe with all the energy that you have, then you will see that ‘what is’ has no value or importance, it is totally non-existent.”
14) Meditation app. promotion has ended and I missed it by 3 minutes. 😥
🤓Not to worry!!! As soon as you see something noticed in consciousness you have entered the state of meditation... NOW just watch it.
It is that simple...
It’s free!!!
True but it's also ok to feel disappointed.😢
🤓Of course it is.
Did you ‘see’ the noticing of your disappointment???
If you did then you were in a state of meditation.
That simple!
You don’t need an app!!
It is far more important to find—
 ‘a life in meditation’!!!
If ‘the self’ observes... This is the willful act of inspection or introspection.
If ‘the body’ observes... this always flows from noticing. This is natural meditation.
Was all this ‘seen’ because if it was, then this is K’s ‘observation’ / K’s form of meditation which is ‘self inquiry’.
eg. #1 When the chirp of a bird or the movement of something in the woods is noticed —this is all ‘seen’ because ‘seeing’ is the very nature of consciousness.
eg. #2 When a feeling or the movement of a thought is noticed this is ‘seen’.
Over time pure consciousness evolves/returns and it’s content is ‘seen’ with indifference.
This is the natural objectification of consciousness which happens when the noticing of the body is seen.
 —normal human consciousness—
All in Reddit-meditation need to know that if their meditations are legit they will evolve to a ‘life in meditation’. (no more practicing just awareness)
ie. ‘noticing’ and finely attention/just seeing in consciousness.
—which is normal human consciousness—
Summary: It is very important to understand that focused meditation is a beginning and does not need to involve a long period of time before one is in a ‘life of meditation’.
All techniques are simply vehicles on our journey to pure awareness but they must all be left behind because technique is created by and strengthens ‘the self’ and it is ‘this thought-structure / this belief / this conditioning’ that must disintegrate before pure awareness can be realized.
OR as K said,
“We are talking of something entirely different, not of self improvement, but of the cessation of self.”
You are your own teacheguru. All the discussions between K and Bohm are just mind candy and will not take us to no duality.
for myself, the body’s ‘noticing’ suffices. 😌
No analysis is necessary!!! When a ‘feeling’ is noticed this is ‘seen’ / ‘observed’.
This is about moving from the duality of ‘what is and what should be’ to the no duality of ‘what is now’. Noticing accomplishes this.
It is only in the real world of ‘the pathless land/the land of what is’ that we can function normally both mentally and physically.
That’s it!!!
Question: I wonder, is pure observation actually the same as intelligence?
Answer: Well ‘pure observation’ provides the NI with the information that is necessary for it to do its maintenance job* in the ‘now’. In fact —in my opinion, this is the purpose of consciousness, biologically speaking, since consciousness allows the body(the NI) to see itself in the world.
ie. the NI —notices-observes-analyzes- corrects(if necessary, if possible) in the ‘now’ of no duality consciousness.
 * NOTE: this maintenance happens here-now at every level of consciousness with the natural reflex of ‘noticing’ by the NI-gestalt/complex which is the combined and coordinated intelligence of all the biological systems that make up our bodies including the microbiome.
Is pure observation actually the same as intelligence —was your question.
K’s biographer, Stuart Holroyd wrote: "...learning is not something forced but accomplished through observation. For the mind that is choicelessly aware(ie. in no duality), which is attentive and responsive to impressions from the totality of its environment from moment to moment, learning is a natural and continuous process."
K gets the final word on this...
18) an OP from Reddit-meditation:
Leaving this subreddit to find my own way
So many ideas and tips and everything is thrown around here, it's easy to lose yourself in the process of figuring it all out. So I'm leaving and I will find these truths myself. Thank you for everything you have taught me.
Your decision will be rewarded...
UG Krishnamurti put it quite nicely:
"….You are so used to this kind of set up —spiritual teachers, questions and answers— it's a ritual to you.... You are just sitting here listening to me.…. Get up and go. I mean it.... I can't give you the strength.... to stand alone.... I am not out to liberate anybody.... You have to liberate yourself...." (google quote)
How it all began for me/us:
——I am conscious, my consciousness has content and I have no idea what it all means. I am born and I die into a mystery—— I DO NOT KNOW I don’t even know if I can use thought to find meaning’. BUT, the mind will not be silent… a ‘noticing’ of something is seen... over time seeing becomes my meditation, my ‘ZEN’ —eventually our ‘ZEN’. 🧓🏻👩🏻👱🏻‍♂️
We wish you all the best.
20) u/and-observing
The councillor’s creed: —‘Noticing’ is the validation/acknowledgment of ‘what is’ and this is ‘seen’ which is K’s form of observation—
21) u/Teleppath
Q: What do you do when engaged in the dualistic thinking(discursive thinking)?
A: How to disengage from this ceaseless activity, this chatter of the mind has been the greatest problem in the history of human kind and K , bless his heart, found the solution.
In stead of turning away from what is noticed, it was K’s great discovery that we face it, —that when something is noticed the natural tendency of the body is to tune into it/to observe it and in so doing the natural intelligence(the NI) of the body is able to understand and take any measures necessary to bring it in line with the natural functioning of our body.
22) u/Teleppath
K’s kind of meditation is special for two reasons 1) it is completely passive 2) it is 24/7
The thought structure called ‘the self’ is not involved in any way.
Only the body which exists in the here-now is operating in K-consciousness.
In this consciousness the body becomes aware of itself by noticing and then observing what it has noticed. This is the meditation of all living beings and it has been described as seeing/attention/observation/awareness etc. etc.
The key word here is ‘noticing’ ie. noticing something in consciousness. And when this happens it is ‘seen’. You(the self) not involved AND eventually you get use to this noticing and this whole thing evolves into —just seeing.
For many, the first time there is a transformation ‘from the duality consciousness of the self’ to the ‘no duality consciousness of the body’, it is a revelation. You feel it... I mean, this is a mind-body experience that may not have happened to you before. For me it was my epiphany.
BUT there is still lots of grinding ahead because the conditioned mind/brain(the self) doesn’t want to let go of duality consciousness where it is numero-uno. ie. where it exists.
In the end the natural, passive, relentless activity of ‘noticing’ will always win out and you progress from noticing occasionally to noticing often and then just seeing which is living in no duality consciousness/K-consciousness/self-inquiry/‘observation’...

2020.09.18 13:34 Heru_Ur Isis the Star of the Sea

Isis the Star of the Sea
Our Lady, Star of the Sea is an ancient title for the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. The words Star of the Sea are a translation of the Latin title Stella Maris.
The Goddess Isis on the Blason de Paris
The worship of Isis eventually spread throughout the Greco-Roman world, continuing until the suppression of paganism in the Christian era.[5] The popular motif of Isis suckling her son Horus, however, lived on in a Christianized context as the popular image of Mary suckling her infant son Jesus from the fifth century onward.[6]

The Web site Behind the Name notes that the name Mary could also be a name of Egyptian origin, perhaps from the word elements mry, meaning "beloved" or mr, meaning "love".[1]
The names of the Virgin Mothers of the world's many crucified risen saviors are nearly identical. MER, meaning Water and Love, giving us such words as MARine, MARitime, MERmaid, MERge, MARRy, aMORous.

2020.09.18 05:41 futebolstats Em noite iluminada, Del Valle faz cinco e aplica goleada histórica pra cima do Flamengo

2020.09.18 05:07 RedeemedJoshua [Christians Only] Looking for some advice and prayer

For context, I consider myself a non-denominational Christian.

I'll attempt to make this coherent. This is a long post, so be understanding of that please. I will be mentioning issues I'm having, things I'd like discussion about, and things I'd like prayer about. There is some overlap with all of these. Responding to anything here would be appreciated. Don't feel like you have to outdo my word-count.

1.) Breakup: Anger, Letting her go completely/forgetting heforgiving her
I had a breakup recently which has been pretty hard on me. It wasn't a good relationship... It was pretty one sided, and to her, I was just more of a very very part-time boyfriend. Many issues were never resolved, and I'd be ignored when trying to talk about them or when trying to get a resolution. I know she was dishonest, and I know she was unfaithful - at least in a way. She sought attention from other guys - some of whom were very inappropriate with her.
A lot of what she did seemed to be based on attention. I have a lot of anger over everything... especially over how she still doesn't seem to understand how she hurt me & how what she was doing over periods of time was very wrong... but also, I poured myself into her every day, or tried to with my efforts, so there are ties to her - out of habit and love and all these things that I wish would just go away, considering she thought so little of me, tried so little, and I just don't see her wanting to be a part of my life again.
I have tried signing up on certain other sites (mostly Penpal ones), just to talk to people, but I feel as if I am making things worse. My intention was to kind of replace how I would leave messages for her every day - by spreading that out and talking to a lot of people. But it's exhausting to do this. And it ultimately isn't a replacement for a relationship or something. I still long for the hole in my heart to be filled, and to be with someone... But, for clarification: I'm not trying to just get into another relationship... I know I'm very unstable right now, and it would be very unfair to the other person.
2.) Looking to other people too much for affirmation and security
Sorry, I didn't know how else to word this. Basically, I know I lean too much on other people. I know it's also bad to isolate, but there is a balance. In the past 3-4 weeks since the breakup, I've lost my desire for my usual hobbies... like movies, video-games, even food somewhat. And again, I've tried to keep my mind busy by finding lots of people to talk to, but as I said earlier, it just doesn't satisfy. And even if I did happen to meet someone that I got along with (not trying to do this), they are just about never Christian with a similar world view. It's often another "distant" denomination at best.
I guess I'm also saying... I don't know how be content being alone. Even if I still played videogames, I couldn't play a singleplayer game. I'd need to be talking to someone. And I feel like that's a personal flaw, at least to a degree. I grew up as a hermit, but even with that, I think I always really wanted to be with other people. I just often felt very out of place, and didn't relate or didn't feel like I related to others. So I guess growing up, it was easier to just not do things and not try, and busy my mind at home with other things.
I also feel like this is a bit of a tricky thing to ask for help on, because one of my love languages is quality time. At least, I think it is. So, I'm not hoping for advice like to join a monastery and isolate myself more or something. I guess I just need help in getting balance here.
One night, maybe 1 to 2ish weeks after the breakup, I was laying in bed and just begged God to take away my pain that I had over the breakup. And it was gone. But then I reached for my phone, to check messages from all these various sites and apps, and the pain was back as soon as I touched it.
With what was said in the above paragraph... I feel as if I need to unplug a bit, and have felt this on my heart for a while, but I'm struggling with how to do that. Maybe I do sort of know the answer already, but also - I feel as if I need to have good Christian influences in my life. Maybe more than just what is at church once a week, and more than talking to my parents. But I also know that I just don't want to be alone...
3.) Learning what it means to seek God first
Upon breaking up with me, my ex told me that we both need to learn to seek God first, and then once we do that and find our identities in Christ, we will love people better. And even though she caused me a lot of pain and I don't believe a lot of what she has told me, especially with things that came up after the breakup... I think she is right about this. And I do not want to do this to be "good enough" for her; I know that she mostly only gave me pain, rejection, and anxiety... and with her, there's only heart-ache and immaturity.
I don't really know what "seeking God" looks like. I've tried praying more than just for my own wants and desires. Like offering to pray for others when I hear about how things are hard. I haven't done it every night or even more than a few times a week. I guess I sort of have mixed feelings even asking about this, because as a relative said to me recently... "God is always with you, you don't have to look for Him". And I'm not sure it's as complicated as it might seem, I don't know. I guess that's why I'm asking you guys.
4.) Knowledge of my spiritual gift(s)
As someone who grew up in a non-denominational church, I don't think gifts were talked about a lot. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it all. It's not that I doubt God's existence or His power... but I don't think I've really seen these things first hand. I have been told that some Christians think that "the heavens are closed" concerning gifts etc, and it was more for Biblical times.
I recently spoke to a friend who is also a missionary. And I asked him about some of this, and he thinks that believers all have gifts. I asked him about speaking in tongues: what that means. Also I asked this, since I don't understand why many Charismatic/Pentecostal churches seem to have people who speak in tongues, but then you have very good & Biblically sound conservative churches where this never happens. He had referenced, I think, when the Holy Spirit came down or something, and everyone understood in their own language... but I am still unsure what to think of it.
I feel as if maybe if I had a spiritual gift, and IF every believer has them, mine would be something like acts of service / doing things for others. Which in terms of gifts, from a worldly perspective, is frankly not what I would pick - if I had a choice. I mean, I enjoy doing things for people, sure. But as someone with a failing body, I would much prefer to be able to heal others and myself. For reference - I'm 30. Have had psoriasis and other skin conditions all my life. Pretty sure I recently began getting arthritis because of my psoriasis.
And concerning gifts - how do you know? If you were able to heal others, how do you know? I would love to be able to do this, but I feel like it's a bit of a catch 22 where you'd have to believe for it to happen. And if you doubt it or something when laying hands on and praying for someone, then it doesn't happen... then it makes you and frankly Jesus look bad. I don't know, I'd like your input.
5.) Prayer Request: Guidance for my life direction, encouragement for my purpose
I've been stagnant for a long time. I've pretty much convinced myself that I can't amount to anything. And I was never super great (nor interested) in school. But I feel as if I do need to get a degree - to open doors & get a "career-paying job" (not just a 40 hour work week with little pay elsewhere), so I am trying to study more outside of work to develop my discipline, and see if maybe I can get to a point with programming where I feel it's something I can & would do - before committing to a university program.
As for encouragement for my purpose - I know God doesn't need me. But He can use me, if I am willing. And I want to know how I can be useful. I asked my missionary friend also about this, and he said that for some people, God gives them a very specific message about what He wants them to do with their life - BUT, that is not most people. For most people, our charge is to "Love God, and love people"... and just continue honoring God in all we do.
So for clarity, I'm also asking for a lot of encouragement that my existence matters, that I can do something worthwhile, that I can be useful for God. To be clear: I am NOT suicidal. I would never do that. I just feel worthless, and like any commitment or plans I have tend to fail.
6.) Prayer Request: Prayer for healing of my body
Namely the arthritis and psoriasis, but other things to be healed would be great.
7.) Anyone know if SOZO / SOZO sessions is actually Biblically sound or good?
I was recommended it by someone who heard about my breakup, but an article I found makes it seem as if it is unnecessary, new age, not safe, etc.
Here's the article:
8.) Resources recommended for struggling with the trinity?
I was "raised in" Christianity, but I still sort of struggle with the Trinity in a way. I mean, a lot of Jesus being the messiah people didn't expect/didn't want makes sense. But I still have doubts in a way, and I don't want to be like the people that Jesus sends away, where he says he never knew them.
And I know I have had answered prayers. I used to get sleep paralysis years ago when I was far from God. I'm not someone who reads about this stuff or watches horror movies regularly - at least, I especially hadn't back then. And I saw black shadows when it happened. The first time, it was pacing the room in daylight. The second time, it was standing over me - and I saw it in the middle of the night. I'm thankful for these experiences, because I know it was demonic... and maybe I am greedy for asking for more experiences, but I want to be sure my faith is sure and solidified... I know that trying to reconnect with God back then made this all stop though.

2020.09.17 20:33 Gileriodekel Some changes coming to /r/Mormon rules

Last year we were growing large enough and quick enough that we decided to hammer out some new rules to run the community from. Our first step was to revamp our flair system to allow folks to better filter what they want to see. This was on 09/28/19 and our subscriber count at the time was 12,980.
3 months later on 12/27/19, after months of discussions, the mods released The New /Mormon Rules in order to be transparent with how the community operates. The subscriber count at this point in time was 14,378.
Since we rolled out our new flair system we have seen a over 7,400 new subscribers, which represents a 35% boost in subscribers.
While these statistics are pretty cool, the purpose of me telling you this isn't to brag about our community. The purpose is to share about how our community is going to grow next. Right now the mods have only made a couple firm decisions about how we feel will move the community to its next stage:

We introduced the calendar back in July but we felt like this is a big enough addition that it should be mentioned again. We wanted a better way to keep track of these events for the community than posting about it a couple days beforehand. We found that Reddit has a calendar sidebar widget, and we decided to add it to our sidebar.
The calendar is used as a way to notify people of any other upcoming events in the Mormon world, such as Pioneer day, Sunstone Symposium, FairMormon Conference, any marches/parades, meetups, clubs, seminars, or anything of this sort of nature. If you know of an event that you think should be added to the calendar, make a post and ping one of the mods or message the mods directly and we'll add it to the calendar.
We want to highlight that this calendar is for the community, and we welcome user additions to it. Please use it to share things that might of interest to the broader Mormon related audience.
EDIT: with the help of StevenRushing we added a direct link to the calendar in our menu :) Thanks Steven!

The flair system is a great idea; it allows people to know what the topic of the conversation is before they even click on the post. However, the only explanation we have given as to what is expected for the flairs was given last September. Since then its been whatever someone feels is the best label. However, time has proven this hasn't been the best idea, since we as mods weren't consistently clear on what the purpose of each flair was for.
I recently went through 30 days of posts with the "Controversial" flair and found some interesting trends. I found that 26% of posts would probably be better flaired "cultural" and 5% of posts as "Scholarship". This didn't surprise me since a lot of mod time is spent with reflairing posts that have the wrong flair. I also found that about 17% of "Controversial" posts were about apologetics.
In light of this, we are making some big changes to our flair system.
The first big change is we are adding, removing, and changing some of our flairs. The new set and their definitions will be:
The second big change is Automod will automatically sticky a comment to each post and remind the community of what the expectation for that post is. For example, if someone posted a meta post, automod would say:
Hello! This is a META post. It is for discussions centered around agreements, disagreements, and observations about Mormon and/or other Mormon-related subreddits.
Gileriodekel, if your post doesn't fit this definition, we kindly ask you to delete this post and repost it with the appropriate flair. You can find a list of our flairs and their definitions in section 0.6 of our rules.
To those commenting: please stay on topic, remember to follow the community's rules, and message the mods if there is a problem or rule violation.
Keep on Mormoning!
The last big change to the flair system is that we will be requiring flair for every post. This will help the community better pick and be reminded of what flair is best appropriate for their content.

Part of the rules we rolled out in January was banning crossposts from /Exmormon and the faithful subs. We had a couple of different reasons for this: 1. We wanted to bring conversations to our community, not direct people to other communities. 2. During The Great SoCalChrist Brigading of 2019 the mods of the faithful subs came to us and asked us to ban folks from directing the brigading to their community. We agreed that they shouldn't have to deal with the shitshow either so we agreed. After things settled down the faithful mods asked if we would keep this temporary rule a permanent one. They said that linking to their community more often than not just lead to brigading them. We wanted to be good neighbors so we agreed to do so.
Our current rule 0.4.3 says:
This sub is not a "safe space" or a "free-for-all" in terms of speech. We are a community built around free and honest discussion, but as with all communities, there have to be ground rules.
The rest of the rules describe those ground rules. Among those are rules 2, 3, and 4.
Rule 2 encourages us to treat each other with general respect in order to stimulate productive and thoughtful conversations. Rule 3 encourages us to be honest and transparent about our intentions, stay on topic, and to not silence others. Rule 4 says that posting your content (which is off site) is fine, but it should not be the only way that you contribute to the community; in other words be a part of the community if you want to use us as a platform for your content.
A couple of weeks ago a user pointed out to the mods that /CougarBoardGems seems to break the spirit of rule 2. They compared it to a kind of Exmormon response to /ExmoCringe. They made a good case as to why both of these subs are problematic to the goals of our community as outlined in out rules. This is why from now on we are banning crossposts from subreddits whose primary purpose is to mock or demean others. That would rule out /CougarBoardGems, /ExmoCringe, any cringe sub, or subreddits dedicated to demeaning others. This rule does not curtail the ability of users to quote content from other subreddits for discussion, with the goal of discussing current events, cultural trends, or bringing closed discussion into this forum where it can be openly discussed. Remember that the goals of this subreddit are to increase civil, and respectful dialogue.

Our sub has gained a lot of steam; since January we have gained over 6,000 subscribers, which represents about a 30% increase. Last year we recognized the need for the "gotcha" rule, and implemented that. Arguably that is the rule that is violated the most. We decided that since it is such a big deal, we needed to hammer out more details for the rule. Rule 3, in its entirety, will now read as follows:
3 Gotcha
Do not seek out to needlessly dismiss, silence, mock, or convert others.
Our goal is to foster a community that seeks to understand and be understood through valuable discussion. This requires a willingness to accept that other people will come to conclusions and hold beliefs that are different from yours. When contributing to the community, do not assume that everyone shares or understands your beliefs. We encourage good faith discussion over different points of view, but you should not seek out to needlessly dismiss, silence, mock, or convert others. Such content is a poor foundation of respect/civility. Doing so ultimately leads to the conclusion that there are no valid alternative views. Diversity of thought and sometimes disagreement are the foundation upon which interesting conversations are based.
Content that contributes to shutting down meaningful conversation is not tolerated, regardless of intent, especially if the comment is made without follow-up or the intent is clearly contemptuous. If a contributor who is engaging in this behavior becomes hostile or belligerent after correction, that contributor will also be banned on an as-needed basis. If you feel that you are triggered by a comment, please take some time away instead of lashing out and come back to participate with a desire to understand where others are coming from.
This rule is highly contextual, and so it is difficult to come up with a comprehensive list of how to violate it. We have a couple of examples of how the this rule may be broken.
This comment by Bow-of-fine-steel gives good hypotheticals about what is and is not ok. Some more examples would include: - Whataboutisms - "mic drops" - "drive-by pwning" - Mocking - Posting content with the explicit purpose of de-converting someone else. For example, linking to the CES letter with no comment on a post by a believer who is struggling with their testimony. Instead, encourage them to seek all available sources, and list the CES letter as one of several links they can look into. Or better yet, say what your own experience was and offer to provide resources if they are interested, and then only provide links when requested. - Comment "but Brigham Young was racist..." on a post that is completely unrelated to racism or Brigham Young. Please stay on topic. - Comment "but what about the $100 billion hedge fund?" on a post highlighting humanitarian work. Instead, focus on the topic of humanitarian work or write a civil comment about how you believe the hedge fund and humanitarian work are related and what you conclude from that. - Reply to a post about a faith transition with judgement about their adherence to gospel standards or speculation about what sins they may be guilty of that would cause a loss of the spirit, as you see it. Instead, show respect for the faith journey of others, avoid making morality judgements about others, and comment how you might react to the situation instead. - Reply to a post about a vulnerable spiritual experience with "that would be nice if God existed". Instead, if you must express disagreement, comment along the lines of "My experience has been different, but I see this was an important experience for you. How do you distinguish between..."
One common element in responses designed shut down conversation is that they tend to be a link without comment or a single sentence or two. We will not be moderating based on the length of content, but if your comment or post is a knee jerk reaction to something else, you should stop and consider whether it is attempting to shut down further discussion.
Additionally, many things that might be inappropriate as a response to someone else would be appropriate if you decided to just start your own thread about the topic.

Politics are inherently divisive, especially now-a-days and leading up to the election. We've found that political posts often devolve into vitriol.
In light of this, we are adding a new rule: No politics. It will be added to our sidebar and its long-form version will read as:
7 No Politics
Politics are not permitted unless they are directly related to Mormonism.
  • Actions of individual politicians who happen to be Mormon
  • Political topics that are of interest to Mormons but not directly related to Mormonism
Posts unacceptable for this subreddit should be redirected to /MormonPolitics or /MoPolitics.
  • Political policies promoted by a Mormon sect
  • Analysis of how Mormons are affected by a political policy
  • Politician who describes their relationship with Mormonism

Changes to Moderation team

Please see ArchimedesPPL's post here

The mods are weighing the pros an cons of some other rules as well. If we decide to move forward with them they will get their own separate posts and also be added to this list of changes.
On a more personal note, you guys are amazing. This community means a hell of a lot to me. I have made good friends here and have been able to express my life and spiritual journey with people here. This community is definitely becoming its own place, and not just living in the shadows of others anymore and I'm excited to see it grow! :)
If you guys have any feedback on the new rules or potential rules that we could add or tweak the mods are all ears!
Keep Mormoning!
